UltraViolet Digital Media Platform Ends Service
posted on by Karen Ressler
The digital video platform UltraViolet announced at the end of January that it is closing down on July 31. Until this time, users will still be able to access their UltraViolet library of digital movies and TV shows. In most cases, movies will remain available in the user's library on digital retailer platforms that are linked to UltraViolet. The staff advised users to not close their UltraViolet accounts or unlink it from retailers.
Users will also be able to purchase and redeem digital codes in the remaining time, but depending on the retailer, these redemptions may or may not be added to the user's UltraViolet library. After the shutdown date, users will still be able to make purchases and redeem codes, but only through separate retailers.
UltraViolet launched in 2011 to serve as a conduit between major movie studios and online digital media retailers. Users can redeem codes, usually included with home video releases, on the UltraViolet website to claim digital copies of films or TV shows. The user then must add the film or show to their library on an affiliated online digital media retailer in order to view it. Retailers that could be linked to UltraViolet included Vudu, Fandango Now, Kaleidescape, Verizon FiOS, and the studios' own websites. Not every UltraViolet film or TV show was available through every store.
Several anime released from companies such as Funimation (distributed by Universal Pictures) and Anchor Bay have offered UltraViolet codes.
