Newest Zelda Game Delayed to 2017, But Adds 'NX' Support

posted on by Egan Loo

Nintendo announced on Wednesday that the latest game in The Legend of Zelda franchise has been delayed to 2017 to improve the product quality. The game had previously been scheduled for Wii U for 2016.

In addition, Nintendo announced that a version for its next-generation platform (codenamed "NX") will go on sale simultaneously with the Wii U version. The "NX" platform is slated for release in March 2017.

Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma and fellow Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto had said in a video message at The Game Awards in December 2014 that the game was slated for 2015. As recently as January, Nintendo was still aiming for the end of 2015.

Aonuma then announced in March 2015 that the game has been delayed until after 2015. Aonuma apologized for the delay and explained, "In these last three months, as the team has experience firsthand the freedom of exploration that hasn't existed in any Zelda game to date, we have discovered several new possibilities for this game. As we have worked to turn these possibilities into reality, new ideas have continued to spring forth, and it now feels like we have the potential to create something that exceeds my own expectations."
