Supanova Brisbane 2009
Saturday

by Luke Carroll,

The first full day of Supanova is always met with a lot of anticipation for some. Those who don't want to wind up waiting in line for too long are required to arrive at a ridiculous hour in order to snag a position at the front of the queue. This year proved no different and although the threat of rain was looming, a few dozen dedicated attendees manage to already begin the line three hours prior to the doors opening. In case of a down pour, security took the initiative to move the crowd while they were still small back to the car park area and begin the process of separating everyone into their respected lines.

Although the line slowly began to grow with every passing minute, it wasn't until about an hour out that the groups began to arrive and the line grew like wildfire. Sadly a misunderstanding in communication during the final 20 minutes cause an all out pack to leave the lines and rush around to the front long before the convention was ready to start. Eventually everything sorted itself out, and soon we were let into the main hall to start our fun filled day.

Upon entering the hall, we were greeted with what can only be described as a big blast of déjà vu. With many of the big stalls managing to secure their same spots once again this year, it was hard not to pinch yourself and try and play a game of spotting what exactly has changed. The same thankfully cannot be said about the event schedule which went through another reshuffle to accompany Madman's Cosplay Competition. Nevertheless, with a highlighter marking my busy schedule for the day, I began my trek around the venue and enjoyed an hour of leisure before arriving at the JB Seminar Room for Vic Mignonga's first talk of the weekend.

Listed as Vic Magnogna: Full Metal Voice Acting, this talk was very much a Q&A, giving the many of the fan girls an opportunity to ask there most desired questions to the man himself. And ask they did. Not only were the crowd treated to some funny stories from Vic, but were granted the chance to see him sing, play around and put his vocal cords on the line to many character one liners. By now the threatening clouds had managed to completely disappear, and soon it was off to the foyer for the Cosplay Chess.

If there has been one event on the schedule that has yet to ever start on time, the Cosplay Chess would be it. This time around, it took half an hour before the first move was actually taken. Thankfully the game proved to be quite a one sided affair, ending only a quarter of an hour later. Following this, it was off to the Anime Trivia, a low key three round event that pit teams of five against each other in a bid to see who knows their anime the best. Sadly it was over just as quick as it began, and soon the crowds began to merge into the Madman theater in preparations for the newest schedule addition, Madman's Cosplay Championships.

This competition was created for the most serious of cosplayers. The final prize on offer for the winner was nothing short of a trip to Japan to attend the Tokyo Anime Fair in 2010. As expected the hall filled up completely for this event, but sadly only four contestants were on display for this round. The amount of work noticeable on those four outfits however were nothing short of astounding to see. For the competition, each contestant was required to do a skit and a short interview with the ever entertaining John Robertson. It certainly proved an eye opener, especially to the amount of work some people actually do in order to have their costumes looking as authentic as possible. Sadly it was all over too soon, however next up on the schedule was the final event for the day, Madman's Cosplay Competition.

Taking its cues from previous years, the Cosplay Competition was a quick no fussed affair. Contestants were given up to two minutes for a skit or allowed just to pose before leaving the stage. This caused quite some efficiency that certainly made up for the delayed start to the competition. John Robertson was once again on the microphone, delivering a memorable and fun performance that had the whole crowd won over. The infamous messages on the wall also came back for brief and worthy appearances. Surprisingly, the Cosplay Competition manage to finish on time this year, allowing many people to still have a last chance at shopping before the hall closed and the day officially ended.

With six o'clock looming, it was time to leave. The first day was finally finished, and it would only be half a day before people were back in line awaiting to do it all again. Supanova is back in fine form, and despite another chance of rain happening for Sunday, it was still shaping up to be another action packed day that will no doubt be keeping many on the move right until the final buzzer.
