What? With how broadly painted both sides end up being (Empire=EVIL, Night Raid=GOOD) I don't see how much of an argument for moral grayness can be made. There isn't really much indication that what Night Raid does might not end up being good for everyone. Sure they're methods are rather blunt and messy, but the author never made any attempt to characterize most of the baddies as folks who deserve mercy any mercy at all. The series just kinda pays lip service to moral grayness and does little nothing to follow through with it.

Eh, basically to sum up Akame ga Kill, good, but could have been done much better. Would've helped if they had more of a budget too.

Budget was a problem for the anime, but the anime also completely jettisoned the plot of the manga towards the end, so it's not at all comparable to the manga.

I agree that the first volume felt like it could do with a little more explanation on how this world works, and I felt the art could be a bit better. Still, pretty good stuff, I'll definitely pick up the second volume.

It didn't really jettison it completely. Sure details were cut/altered to fit the length, but the manga's final storyline seems to heading down a similar path.

The manga is moving towards a similar ending but the implications leading towards the conclusions are vastly different. Plot points about unknown locations, characters that didn't even exist in the anime, characters that are still alive, other imperial arms users.
The story is in its final arc, but there is so much to wrap up...
The journey is king.
