I'm not too technical, so forgive me if this sounds stupid. Does the fact that this old server is giving out mean the plans for a pay version of the site are scrapped?

Nope.
The old server is still good. It just can't handle 30 000 visitors a day  ;
Serving a couple hundred people, it will be much faster than a much more powerful server running 30k+ people. |

Ahh, I see. The few times I got a server error, I had a mental image of your server shooting off sparks and billowing smoke.
BTW , I can see the banner ads on the top of the page now, so I guess I'm no longer stealing from you
