It's also available anywhere Shueisha has previously made their digital editions available, so it's not just an app exclusive. You can find on it on the Kindle Store, eBookJapan, Yahoo Books, etc.
Hope publishing it digitally works out for them. Edit: Decided to buy it. The jpg compression on this is pretty bad... way worse than Viz's. Screen tones are destroyed from the compression. Extremely disappointed over that, but I suppose most people wouldn't notice it when viewing it on their phone/tablet. On a positive note, the color pages look phenomenal, despite that. And at over 650 pages, I suppose it's still a nice deal. |

They should have done the same in NA, why would they stop printing the physical copy? sigh. This way everyone gets pleased, people who prefer digital and people who prefer physical

Because it kept them afloat and pushed digital, which really needed to be pushed. Doing a simultaneous release like they're doing now would've never been possible otherwise. I still am amazed at how effectively Viz has gone about with their digital releases. Keeping them cheap and having regular releases has been great. Glad that they could get it going without Japan doing it first. Shueisha's Japanese digtal releases are usually the same price as physical (though Amazon has a whole 10% discount at the moment on them). Really sucks when you look at Kodansha USA who plans to release digital versions at the same price as physical here in America. I don't plan on buying anything from them. If I'm paying the same price, even though I like digital, I still would prefer to get the physical book. |

I can't seem able to buy the digital issues from Amazon.JP. It won't let me as a North American resident. And tips and tricks to buying the issues and getting them to read on my US Kindle App? |

As far as I know, as long as your Amazon.jp account has a Japanese address as one of your personal addresses, you should be able to buy Kindle Japan books. (Even without being in Japan--I'm also in the US, I just never removed the Japanese address I used when I was in Japan.)
I think you have to have a separate account for Amazon.com and Amazon.jp, though--I can't log in to Amazon.jp with my regular Amazon account. Anyway, in the app you have to deregister and then log back in with your JP account to access your JP library. It's kind of a pain to keep deregistering/logging in to switch between libraries but... oh well. There may be a way to merge accounts, but I don't know. I've started buying a lot of manga on Kindle recently... curse that one-click buy button. I hope other manga magazines follow suit and get on Kindle... |

ebookjapan has no region restrictions.
ebookjapan has apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. Haven't ever tried Yahoo Books. |

Cool! Thanks! After fumbling around with mistranslations and a completely untranslated app, I think I got this figured out. 600+ pages sure takes a long time to Download from Japan! I probably won't buy Japanese jump regularly (even if 3 bucks is a steal. Even for comics I can't actually read), its nice to have a copy around for direct comparison to English Jump. While I really hate to be a spoilsport, is it fair of me to ask whether or not that sort of thing is legal? If it's not your address, I would have been under the impression that Amazon would actually eventually notice if you were using an address that was not your own.
Nevertheless, I actually thought that they let people from around the world buy stuff off any of the Amazon portals. I never tried, but I thought that's how it worked. I guess I was wrong, and I'm kind of disappointed even though I generally don't try to import anything myself to be honest. Well, I guess I may be wrong on that one thinking about it. Does Amazon allow people to make physical purchases regardless of their country and restrict digital purchases to certain regions only because of the differences between physical print copies and digital ones from the standpoint of the law? |

Buying through eBookJapan didn't require me to have a native Japanese address (I even selected 'Foreign Countries' for my registration)
Heck, it didn't even ask me for my address when I entered my credit card number, which I thought was kind of odd. I don't know if eBookJapan is just a loophole or what, but I didn't have to do anything tricky except figure out how to navigate the site and the app by intuition and guesswork. |

ebookjapan specifically states in their FAQ that they support overseas customers as long as you meet the hardware/software requirements.
http://www.ebookjapan.jp/ebj/guide/about_other.asp#03 Generally, ebooks in Japan haven't been shackled with the same level of territory restrictions that other digital media have. Amazon does their own thing with Kindle for whatever reason, but most Japanese ebook stores don't restrict overseas customers. |

Honestly, I'm not really sure about the legality of it either. Amazon is capable of knowing where you are when you make a purchase--there was one time when I tried to make a Kindle Japan purchase and it gave me an error message about my device not physically being in Japan. But the next day that message disappeared and I never saw it again. I assumed they must have revisited their policies on overseas purchases, maybe for Japanese who live overseas or are on business trips and so on. Or at least that's how I justify it to myself. Maybe I should try out eBookJapan instead.
I plan on buying SJ until Akira Toriyama's new series is over, but the only other series in there that I actually read right now is Ansatsu Kyoshitsu... |

I'm surprised that eBookJapan is so loose when it comes to verifying customers. I have dealt with sites in the past that make you jump through a number of hoops before they allow you to purchase anything, so that sounds a good deal different than what I have usually experienced. That being said, as Annf said, a lot of the digital rights management issues that influence western consumers aren't as much of a problem in Japan.
I mentioned before that I buy Weekly Shonen Jump from Viz, but it's great to hear that you guys buy the Japanese version. What sort of file format does it come in if you don't mind me asking? Is it just a download for the Kindle or something like that? I'm really sorry about the edit here, but I accidentally posted this before I was done writing everything. That being said, I was a little curious about one thing. If you buy material from eBookJapan, I wanted to know what formats are available for you to download. I know that I was asking about the Kindle before, but I was curious about that second option since I'm a Nook user. Thank you very much for letting me ask. |

EBooksJapan seems to use a proprietary file format for their iOS and desktop app. But it does provide a file that can be backed up locally, which is very nice.
Ebookjapan's main issue is that their app is untranslated (their storefront isn't so bad once chrome translates it) , so you have to go by intuition with things like logging in with your account. But once you figure it out its easy to navigate. |

Thank you very much for that. I was afraid that you would tell me they used a proprietary file format, and I'll admit to not owning an iOS device. Nevertheless I might still check them out in the future. My Japanese is slowly getting better, but I think I would definitely have to use Bing Translator or something to deal with parts of the homepage that use kanji that I might find less familiar.
