Wow, didn't know a thing about this! At least this won't effect the new Mystery Dungeon game coming out on the 24th.

I haven't read up on the details, but I wonder if this means the company really is guilty of infringement, or they just want to settle the case with some money before things get ugly.

Talk about hitting the lottery! Ouch! That's going to sting Nintendo a bit. Anime hyper Problem is Sony will probably get most of that aas he invented that whilst working for them at the time so basically he did it under their commission using their labs and equipment which means they also have exclusive rights to it.

He should get nothing. That technology doesn't even work.

3D my ass. It just gets all blurry and vaguely 3D-ish at best.

Only reason I'd get one is because of the games themselves.

Since Nintendo just dropped the case and decided to pay, I don't think this will affect them that much, especially with the success of the 3DS and all the games coming for it.
On the other hand, I think Sony would do well to keep the Vita afloat with that money. Keeping the handhelds competitive will make things more interesting.

It works fine for me. One game in particular tricked me into thinking there was actually something flying over my screen. Imagine my embarrassment when I reached out to brush it away.

The 3DS's technology is actually quite incredible. I'm consistantly impressed by it.

The fact that the 3DS has a very strong game line-up is also pretty sweet.

Very different 3D technology (though the core idea is the same, the implementation is different)

Evidently Nintendo has a US branch there.

This isn't over, an appeal is extremely likely.

The problem with 3D technology is that it's effects vary greatly from person to person. Some people can't tolerate it on the 3DS due to headaches or eye fatigue. Others can't see it at all, regardless of the setting. Still to others, it works quite well.

I think it's a pretty interesting idea, but I can't even see the 3D on most of the games myself. That doesn't mean it's a bad idea though.

But shouldn't Japan have jurisdiction, assuming the invention was invented there and both parties are Japan-based? (In other words, what benefit would both parties allow the case by going outside the country?)

This is not about nations, but about international corporations. If a corporation has a presence somewhere, they are liable for actions in that location. Japan is a Nation, Nintendo, is an international corporation. Japan wasn't being sued.
