cannot wait for ragnarok odyssey ! I will have to state that the game they picked for the kickstarter project, would of never reached the goal . If it was valkyria chronicles, i am positive it would of reached its goal for a hard copy release.

As long as there are people willing to pay for a retail copy of a game, retail (physical copies) of games will never die. Maybe it will become a little more niche and expensive, but I can't really see every gamer downloading games in 5/10 years instead of going to a store/buying online.

Monster World IV on virtual console = instabuy for me. I really hope it does well enough to make up for whatever effort they put into localizing it. Anyone who ever enjoyed playing Wonder Boy in Monster World as a kid should check it out, I think.

I'm a big collector and I love all of those special editions that NISA puts out, so I'd be heartbroken if physical media went away. I will never pay anywhere near full price for a digital only copy... since I feel you're not getting a full product. I'd either wait for it to go half price or just skip those titles.
I feel I'm not going to be gaming much longer with the current trend, since the only games I'm really interested in are RPGs.

In 5 years, maybe that's true, but in 10? I'd be surprised if the vast majority of games aren't digital only. Even in 5 years, I could see physical releases being relegated to LE sets and nothing more. Niche titles are already quickly being pushed into download-only, and it's just going to get worse as time goes on.

People projected the same thing for music, but you can still get music CDs... they're just not focused on as much.
I'd expect it closer to 20+ years when we'll start seeing significant titles go digital only. There will always be resistance to it since not everyone is willing to just give into something that only benefits the companies and not consumers.

There are the occasional consumers like me, of course, who see a digital copy as more valuable than a physical copy, who are always frustrated when they have to go get a physical object, which then occupies space, can be damaged, can get lost, etc. to get access to infinitely reproducible information. I don't know how big my faction is, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it grow.

Well, I see it this way: It basically takes away your ability to "own" the game, since you can't choose what you want to do with it. You want to let your friend borrow it? Too bad, its stuck to only your account. You want to sell it? Too bad, it stuck to your account. You want to have something to show on your shelf? Too bad, its only on your HDD.
So in the end you're left with a file you paid full price for in most cases that you don't actually own. It benefits the companies greatly since it hurts the used sales market and there are less production costs, but I just don't see the benefit to consumers outside of being lazy. Though I guess in this age, forcing the consumer to get off their couch can be viewed as a drawback.

Want to play your game at a friends' house, but don't have your disk? Want to use your shelf/closet space for something else? I mean, yeah, you can come up with situations where one approach or the other is better. Different people place different values on certain situations. To say that one is somehow better for consumers than another without identifying which consumer you're talking about doesn't make sense.
For me, I'm at a point in my life where I simply don't want more stuff. Of any kind. Every physical object I have to keep track of is a penalty imposed on me by the company, and makes me that much less interested in making a purchase.

I'll admit, I resisted digital download for a very long time - with books, anime and video games. Eventually, though, if I wanted to see/play something I had no choice but to bite the bullet and convert. I still prefer having a physical copy in my hand and on my shelf (I refuse to get a Kindle, I love having an actual book in my hand), but anime is about 50/50 now on streaming. That said, if they give me a physical copy of one of my favorite anime shows that I watched streaming, I will totally buy that up.
As for video games, so far my downloading has been limited to Dragon Age and Final Fantasy DLCs, but I don't doubt that somewhere down the line I will end up downloading a full game given how many are *only* being made for download.
But so long as they continue to offer physical versions, I'll totally buy those. I love being able to look at my shelf and *know* that I have something, rather than search through a file library to try and remember. And I think so long as people like me continue to buy physical versions, they'll stick around in some form. Even if it's only collector editions.

Cd's/music is different from games however. Not everyone wants to pay 20 dollars for x album to only listen to few songs they really like. This is why iTunes is so successful on the digital music front allowing you to pay .69 to 1.29 per song you like then you can burn them off into your own mix cd.
Video games will never reach that hence the reason why there will always be call for physical media for them, unless publishers are willing to cut the prices of digital copies by 20-30% on stores then some isn't going to pay 40 dollars for digital copy of something when they can get a physical copy with swag. " quoting Jim from the escapist here".
Personally I went out all the x-mas on steam picking up pc games left/right such as newvegas for only 4.99 and that's around 500hr game if you get into the modding community. To stop my rambling yeah there is future for digital games the question is how should they go about it, keep in mind not everyone has the internet despite it being 2012 and not everyone will have it 5-10 years later.

Sure, but the greatest source of resistance for digitally downloaded music for a long time was the industry itself, not the consumer. Despite that, there's a generation of kids growing up right now who have probably never owned or even touched a music CD. That's the kind of future I'm seeing here. Like I said, I don't see it happening soon, but I also don't see the next generation of gamers placing any value at all on physical ownership, and they're going to be the market drivers 10 years from now, not us.

Yeah, that's me. I just love the words "limited edition." Bought NIS America's LE for Hyperdimension Neptunia (god that game sucked though) and Atelier Totori and now I've got the LE for Atelier Meruru preordered. Although, NIS is pretty good about their LE's though, for example Meruru is $65, only $5 more than a typical game. Compared to the LE I bought for Final Fantasy 13-2 ($80, as I recall) or Uncharted 3 ($90?), that $65 is pretty enticing.
I'm not against digital only releases. If that's what it takes to get Valkyria Chronicles 3 here, then so be it. But I'd much rather have physical copies, with goodies if possible.

Digital releases don't sit right with everyone. True, it's technically a space-saver for some people who don't have the room for more physical games and taking them on a portable system is always a plus, but everyone has preferences. I'm happy to hear I may be able to play Ys Origin in any case since, for some reason, they chose to completely ignore that game in the past.
