Also of note is Aaron Dismuke's casting as young Ginko in episode 26; let's just say that he will not ever be reprising his role as Fullmetal Alchemist's Al.

So his voice got deeper? It might still work for Al if they ever make a sequel where Al is much older. Laughing The Japanese voice for young Ginko sounded more like a woman than a young boy to me.

Anyways, great review. I'm looking forward to buying this show as a complete box set. The last four episodes may have been more of the same and may have not reach any conclusion by the end of it but they worked for me as simply more captivating stories with mushi involved.

It is a shame this show had to end, It was without a doubt one of my favorite series of last year, I am hoping they consider making a second series because this show is just too powerful and too beautiful not to have a sequel.

Agreed, this is one series that could go on for quite a long time and I would not be wondering when it will all end.

I haven't received my copy of the final volume yet, but this was indeed my favorite series on DVD of 2007/2008. After this and the final volume of Eureka Seven, no future release aside from Gurren Lagann seems good enough to purchase.

I'd think that it would be difficult for the creators to keep writing interesting stories without falling into some repetition, and the last thing I want is for a show to be repetitive. Mushi-shi is very episodic and in my opinion 26 episodes was more than enough for a show of this nature. The problem was what was stated in the review: no definitive ending or a "and life goes on" kind of ending; it just ends. Crying or Very sad

On another note, I wonder how good the Mushi-shi live-action movie is and if that will get licensed and a stateside release.

The live action film had a R2 UK release a couple of months ago. I'm usually skeptic about live action adaptations of anime and wonder if it is any good. Is amazon.uk correct in having Otomo listed as the director of this 131 minute film?

It says right here on the encyclopedia page for Mushishi live-action movie that the director is indeed Katsuhiro Otomo.

Well I definitely agree when the reviewer said that the last episode was the weakest, because it just felt dreary compared to the other fantastic episodes on the DVD.

I felt the opposite, the last episode was just as good as the previous three ones!

The R2 release is worth seeing. The scenery is quite captivating; the special effects are very well integrated and believable; and the ending is just enigmatic enough to leave you pleasantly puzzled. The pacing is slow, however, and the subtitling (no dub) is sometimes a little haphazard, but overall it is an most enjoyable film.

That said, I still prefer the anime (and the manga), and am still trying to find time to see the last volume which has just managed to crawl its way across 'the pond' - or maybe it's good old Royal Mail's relaxed attitude to delivery schedules again!

On that note, considering that it's been recently announced that the original manga will end soon -- presumably with ten volumes worth of material -- and the stupendous success of the franchise in Japan, Mushi-shi is quite likely to be given a second series.

I think all us fans could appreciate that.

If there's enough material left in the manga and if they can continue to offer something new and different in each episode, I'd be down for a second series. I could just be fearing the worst when I think that Mushi-shi can only become more repetitive if it continues down the road, but the fear is still there.

American series with stand-alone episodes are able to go on for years and still be pretty good for at least most of its run. I see no reason why the Japanese can't do it.

the only long running, episodic, anime series I know of would be Detective Conan (aka Case Closed)

I cant vouch for quality but it has to have something to keep running for more than 500 episodes.

Hmm.

DVDs 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 have been reviewed. Saving the best for last? A Sea of Writings (筆の海) seems to be the favorite of most fans.
