with arcane and other international winners this doesn't feel too bad, but like always there are some questionable nominees. secret level getting 3 nominees in the best tv effects, no anime nominees for any tv award and dieasel legacy for best game animation which doesn't even look that impresive (not because it's 2d, because it looks rouge). on the whole i"m glad there is an award mostly for westarn animation because i feel like discussion for the ones not made for kids is very minimal on the internet, but i want them to stop pretending they care about anime outside of the "independent" award because it makes the omissions that much more noticable.

In my opinion, Look Back was the only anime worth being nominated for anything this awards season and it's been largely ignored by everyone. I don't know what that says about the state of anime in 2024 but it could've used more original movies.
There's always next (or this) year. Maybe The Colors Within will get some accolades.

Haven't seen Look Back yet, but have absolutely no problem with Flow winning best independent feature award. That flick was god tier.

It's called Annie, because the Universal and Netflix Awards would be too long.

Looks like some people in these replies haven't watched Flow or Arcane yet, eh?

Though I can't speak about Flow, since it hasn't even released over here yet, I've watched both seasons of Arcane and I can say it was a resounding meh, all style no substance kind of show, yes it was visually impressive, but the actual writing is on par with the average marvel movie, and while they did setup some interesting plot points in season 1, season 2 just drops all of it in favor of convenient big bad to unite everyone (oppressors and oppressed) for big world saving battle, definitely not award material.
On the upside though the first season made Riot no money, so fingers crossed the second will be as much of a financial disaster (yes I hate Riot and League).

To be fair, The Wild Robot is very, very good. The Anime Film industry usually only has one or, in a good year, two films that can be considered for an Annie award these days and not usually multiple nominations on the scale like Wild Robot. The TV show space however yes, but it's very completive by multiple studios all over the world, so of course it's going to be tough to win there. I also don't think them focusing on a ton isekai anime is helping them. In my opinion, it just screams lazy writing most of the time, but not always because there is some good stuff out there.

Might be disappointing to hear then, that these shows are not made to make money in the first place. Not through streaming numbers and bluray sales anyway, as the goal is to push the brand as a whole. And there are already more animated shows planned and being actively developed, so it seems like they are pretty satisfied with how things are going.

It wasn't meant to make money through streaming or blu-ray, it was meant to boost the playerbase and sell skins, which it didn't, no matter how much the co-founder copes on reddit. And sure, they can keep making more of their slop, corpos pissing money into a pit will never not be funny.
