This was definitely one of those adaptions that's even worse than it appears to be, surgically removing everything that makes the source novel so [expletive] great and leaving viewers convinced it could never have been good in the first place.

If you liked anything here or even just wanted to like it, read the books instead.

Nah. Anime's good. I'll stay with it. Seems like another case of source readers angry about stuff cut (I understand) and trying to tell anime onlies what to think , which is too far. I understand being angry at cut and changes. But only speak your own feelings and don't try to say or guess what anime onlies will think. It feels obnoxious when I like an adaptation and some source readers go "acshually you can't possibly like it". The anime was good, and I'm sure the source's even better. No need to fear all anime fans will think the source is shit

I think it's much more obnoxious when you project a bunch of stuff I didn't say onto a perfectly normal opinion.

People whining about cut content is certainly obnoxious, but I've never done that; my problem is purely that it looked like butt and was dull as shit. (I guess 'surgically removing' sounds like I'm talking about cuts? I meant it more metaphorically.)

The novels have something for everyone; get lost in the world building, try and figure out the complex politics, get invested in a huge cast of unique characters, thrill to the action spectacle. The anime was at best just another mid-tier seasonable that would have been largely ignored even if it hadn't been trapped on Hulu.

If you got a good time out of that, great! But the novels were already going under the radar in English, and this clearly didn't do anything to change that.

I think it looked great. One of the season’s best and a banger job by the staff (much better than Passione’s previous project: Excalibur Academy). And for popularity: sometimes good shows will go underappreciated, like Bravern or Akudama Drive. This anime’s problem seems to be the first half introducing different characters and the conflicts, and I don’t know how that could have been done better to not lose audience. That part needed to be there so the conflicts aren’t complete nonsense, but taking it’s time and switching which characters we follow each episode instead of getting to conflicts earlier and going for a more traditional structure of following a clear main lead is precisely what frustrated a lot of people. I guess some stories are just doomed to only reach an smaller audience because what they offer is not what the larger amount of fans at this time want from their anime

You did say, "leaving viewers convinced it could never be good in the first place." That goes beyond just expressing a "perfectly normal opinion" to making an awfully big assumption. As someone who shares the reactions of both bassgs435 and the reviewer to the series, I also find you to be overstepping there.

(And to be clear, I'm speaking as a fan, not a Moderator, on this point.)

From a newcomer's perspective, I thought the anime did fine on this. I am curious, though: if you think the anime "looks like butt," what would it have taken to satisfy you? This wasn't a slipshod production by any means. Or is your issue more about the style of the visuals used? It does have a decidedly darker and grittier look than fantasy anime commonly do (enough so that I surmised at the time the series ended that some may not like the look because of that), but I thought that served the tone of the work well.

Anyway, like Kevin, I enjoyed the series much more once I understood that the whole thing was just a long prologue and so adjusted my expectations accordingly. I'll definitely be back for the second season.

Initially I did feel a bit lost in the series as all the smaller plot lines played out with different characters every week, but by the end I was really satisfied. I enjoyed the show a lot more once everything had come together.

From what I recall the first season only adapted vol 1. of the novels. So, they must have a ton of stuff crammed into them.

Ishura was one of my favourites of that season. My only complaint is that they offed interesting characters before they could really get going. Apart from that, I loved it.Great characters and worldbuilding. Regnejee is my boy.
