It seems like it would be a good idea to list what will/won't be free each month but what do I know. Would be nice if Crunchyroll did something that gave them any goodwill lately.

First they buy out Kazé. Then they shut down superior streaming services in both germany and france while not being able to migrate even 2/3 of the content, increase their sub fee and now end their ad supported viewing. What a shitshow.

In other words, AVOD is basically done.

"Select episodes of our most popular a-" are they just wanting piracy to get even more rampant than it already is? Because that's literally how you do it! At least we have places like southeast asia and their licensing companies putting all their stuff on sites like YouTube and also somehow southeast asian bilibili

Geez, it's like they specifically want to kickstart the next age of anime piracy. AVODs are arguably the most effective part of the streaming model in limiting piracy. The dwindling of fan translation groups the last couple years is a big sign of that. Do they seriously think this will eventually turn every free user into a subscribing user?

So they are getting rid of VOD while others including massive Netflix are adding it in… makes sense…..

Considering Crunchyroll's origins, irony overload.

Yes, I would like to point that out too. For anyone that didn't know, Crunchyroll started out as a pirate website before it became full legit.

Remember when you pay for subscription to cable TV because it promise no ads? I do, back in 1979. Mark my words, in couple years you will pay for VOD, and you will still get ads. That’s where heading.

Wish Crunchyroll only forced subscriptions on the latest 3 seasons or so of anime and after that, make them available for everyone with ads and subs don't get any ads.

So, a vague statement that doesn't really answer anything, and doesn't address or acknowledge that they went back on their word in their statement from March this year. Like it's not even a year old that they promised older content would remain free as ad supported streams. I get company plans change over time and sometimes old statements will cease to be true, but the extremely short span of time makes it seem to me like the past statement was likely just a lie to mollify people upset at the lack of new ad supported simulcasts, and not something they ever meant to stick with.

Some sort of rotating schedule of free ad-supported anime wouldn't be terrible, but only if it didn't change the status of the older anime they claimed would remain free. And notably I don't think any of the anime streams from Spring 2022 onward have now become available as ad supported free streams. Sure seems like this "rotating schedule" is just them making various free anime no longer free while not even announcing when it happens.

Very frustrating.
