Ah, well. What's the difference between it and doujinshi?

This actually made some money . It's alright for people to see Doremon have sex, but not for someone to make a half decent manga. |

This was sold in bookstores, and not just conventions

Probably a quarter of a point. |

Tcheh. So fanworks are only OK if not enough people like them?
Although I guess selling at bookstores makes a difference. |

Possibly. He probably could have sold it just at conventions and it may have been alright. If the parent companies are willing to settle for a share of the profits then I suppose it works out that way for all three parties, and no legal action ensues.

Important thing to make a note of: he was not forced to give up all the money he made - just a portion of it. It's not like Shogakukan and Fujiko Pro cleaned him out.

Jariten: If he's that popular, they should just hire him.

Which bookstore? Many anime/manga specialty stores e.g. Comic Toranoana have doujinshi stocked so people who are unable to attend conventions personally can buy them later. If it was sold in Kinokuniya then it's a different story. |

I was about to say that. Last time in Toranoana they have a whole floor for dôjinshi (absolutely NOT for children!)... and boy, they were selling. Where's the diference between "Kira X Lacus Naughty things", "Doraemon XXX" and and "Doraemon Ending"?
Unless, of course, it was sold as "the true ending" of Doraemon, approved by its authors and Shogakukan... |

You got it wrong. It should be "Kira X Athrun." (dormcat stuff his ears and escaped from yaoi fangirls screaming "KYAAA~~~~~") |

lol. He got lucky. Had he attempted to do something like that in America, it probably would not have even made it to the publisher, let alone a book store; and the companies involved would have probably sued his butt to no end lol.

The reason he got boned was because fan works are only protected legally when they're clearly a parody (for example, hentai works are clearly parodies, thus they don't get sued, for the most part).
Legally, the creators any fan works that aren't parodies are vulnerable, it's simply that they almost never get sued unless they either try to make a profit, or they try to pass it off as the real thing. |
