I wonder why he decided to step down?

I think it is more likely Sega replaced him. His tweet starts with, "Welp" and ends with a broken blue heart. It reads more like somebody who found out he was replaced, but acknowledges that there are no guarantees of returning to the same role.

That would make sense. Some people on Twitter suggested that he might be replaced with Ben Schwartz, who played Sonic for the 2020 movie. On the one hand, that would be a mean move on Sega's part if that were true. But on the other hand, this would mean the games would have to be unionized (there currently are not) and a bunch of the remaining Sonic franchise actors would get better pay/benefits.

Anyway, good luck Roger. He was an amazing Sonic...

It's strange that even though he played him the longest, I feel that he appeared in less games(discounting crossover games and cameos) than Jason Griffith. It also makes me feel old as I can still remember when Anyway this whole thing makes me feel old, I can still remember when Urkel voiced Sonic.

It's not "mean" anymore than it was "mean" when Ryan Drummon was replaced by Jason Griffith, or when Jason Griffith was replaced by Roger Craig Smith.

Sonic the Hedgehog simply has a history of being recast when it comes to his English voice, going even further back to Jaleel White & Martin Burke (neither of which did any video games for the character), and while it does suck for Smith (who I haven't heard a ton of in the role, but was definitely really good), I'm sure he knew that this moment was eventually going to come at some point. At the very least, he can pride himself in being the English voice of Sonic for the longest period of time ever.

I think it's another example of contract shenanigans, it happened to Ryan Drummond and the rest of the Sonic Adventure voice cast, it happened to Jason Griffith and the rest of the Sonic X cast, and it's happening again (though we don't know about the rest of the cast)

Mike Pollock didn't get replaced back in 2010.

He sort of did from what I hear, they held auditions for cast members, and he auditioned again.

Oh, I see. Thanks for the correction.

I'm assuming this is the guy that voiced him in the OVA giving him a british accent in the process.

And the iconic "Strange, Isn't it?" line.

But as for the news...it's a shame to see Roger go. I don't think he always got the best material for Sonic, but he made the role his own and had a good run.

I don't know if SEGA can afford to make Ben Schwartz the de-facto Sonic in all media, even if I think Ben would be down for it (and isn't the most costly celebrity) but I feel like either the movies or the upcoming Netflix cartoon has inspired SEGA to do this recast.

So is the another full cast replacement or just Sonic? I'd like to know what SEGA's has going through their minds.

We'll probably find out in the new Sonic material that comes out this year or next year.

The things he and Sega are saying lead me to believe that this was his decision and he’s leaving on good terms.
