NHK is such a disgusting title. As one of my friends once put it, "there's nothing worse than a show touted to being for geeks by geeks", especially when it's about otaku, who are among the worst kind of geek since what they're obsessed about has no real utility value in the real world.

I read the first volume of Welcome to the N.H.K. last week and I loved it.

Some manga series like to poke fun at otaku culture. And then there's NHK, which basically stabs it in the face.

This cracked me up.

Quote:
Just like Satou's thought processes, the plot has a tendency to ramble in various directions without getting to the point. There's Misaki and her Hikikomori rehabilitation project, the ero-game development with next-door neighbor Yamazaki, and an emerging subplot involving Satou's former high-school senpai ... but whenever the story starts to run with one thread, it seems to lose track of everything else. Black humor is nice and all, but even in the throes of parody, it's still important to keep the story together.

I suspect this could just be a result of trying to introduce various characters before moving on to the plot. Even if it isn't, I personally didn't mind this jumping around aspect.

Sarcasm or serious?

Because that's such a terribly negative opinion. It's like saying Genshiken is a pile of dungheap because it's about otaku. And if you love it you're the worst kind of otaku ever. Oh yes, you are, you anti-social no-lifer you.

Confused

That character design on the cover does catch me, however! And the premise sounds fun.

Carlo, by what chance do you start reviewing Taiwanese manga? Did you choose the title and order them by your own or an agent had sent them to you?

Nothing as special as that ... I just saw a recommendation on a manga discussion forum and scans were also provided.

Nice to see NHK getting some praise, as I just started reading it and it's quickly becoming my newest obsession. Anime hyper

That "review" made me want to read Welcome To NHK so bad now. I can't wait for my local comic shop to get it in stock, I get discounts there.

I have to admit I wasn't a big fan of Genshiken the anime. I sat through it, but nothing really hooked me. I hope this one is way better, and sounds like it might be.

Later on.

I found NHK kind of depressing because it doesn't sugarcoat otakudom like Genshiken does. My reaction to the first few volumes was something like "OH GOD WHAT HAVE I BECOME!?" followed by hours of sobbing in my room alone.

With that said, it's not bad.

So.....NHK is like the Genshiken for Pervs?

My campus club has been doing the 24 Hr challenge for a few semesters, those who partisipate really enjoy it. Security on the other hand thinks an overnight comic creation event will lead to handy panky Confused....

A manga about bowling? That peaks my interest.

Well, not quite. It's more like the two look at otakudom from different angles. Genshiken is kinda like "haha, look, Ohno has a fetish for middle aged man on man action, isn't that cute?" whereas NHK is more like "Satou loves moe because of his deep dark psychological issues... IF YOU ARE READING THIS MANGA YOU ARE A FAILURE OF A HUMAN BEING JUST LIKE SATOU"

Well, that might be a tad exaggerated, but y'know.

It's funny, I found Genshiken's first volume depressing because it was too "normal" and made me think, "I don't need to read a series about things I already do." (fortunately I got more into the characters as it progressed.) But with NHK it's so over the top that I can only laugh at the sheer shock value.

It really is like looking in a very twisted, refractive mirror and re-thinking everything about your own life.

What kind of hanky panky could sleep-deprived comickers get up to? Laughing I think the main concern would be when they get to that 4 a.m. stage where everything is funny.

There's a clear difference in tone. Genshiken is pretty much a straight-up comedy, with a tad bit of drama as a side dish. NHK, on the other hand, is a very black comedy, and is just as likely to make one cringe as it is to make one laugh. Razz

I'm kind of on the fence about NHK. As much as I like genre self-deprecation, I can only go so far. The otaku from Paranoia Agent disturbed me a lot, but may the context is different there than here.

Of course, I also sat through all of Gunslinger Girl, felt bad while watching it, and still found it enjoyable (save for the ending, but that's another discussion)
