Mixed... about this.
On one hand, it's good that we're going to get gay male leads in some potentially prominent films. ...on the other hand, "Boys Love" label has been... not great for gay men as a whole, with it's fetishization of gay men for a female audience. There's some good ones out there that the female authors were incredibly mindful of this (a couple in which I can think of off the top of my head), but the Boys Love label is definitely not thought positively among LGBT circles (specifically among gay men). I mean, it's to the fact the creator and director of Yuri! on Ice!!! has gone out of her way to tell people to not label it Boys Love, for these very same reason. So yeah, I'm.... not very hopeful. Maybe the people involved in this can prove me wrong, though. Last edited by ChibiGoku on Tue Apr 23, 2019 7:17 am; edited 2 times in total |

I think you can tell from the image they choose and the fact that they're paying the Run with The Wind and Great Passage author to write a BL short story for them exactly what type of BL it is going to be. I'm not sure if you've ever read BL or read anything about BL from people who have read BL (you don't seem to know much about it), but they are definitely going for that indie artsy subgenre of BL that generally doesn't get adapted to anime. The one time it did, Doukyuusei, it was very well recieved here. People actually criticize YoI with doukyuuseis very existence which I think is silly. I Can Hear the Sunspot (another well recieved manga that I would considered in this subgenre) got a live adaptation but was never animated. I think, personally, the west is going to love it. I mean we won't know until they announce their first project, but they 100% seem to be going to a western friendly subgenre of BL. I wonder what it'll be. There are tons of well recieved prestige BL that they can choose from. (Because they never get adapted) Its very exciting especially for western fans as their favorite BL is probably also one of these. "It must be terrible because its BL" is an understandable take, given what gets adapted into anime and its reputation in the west, but its hella depressing. Its a huge genre and theres a lot of fantastic BL out there that no one from the west will ever know about. Last edited by Samiamiam on Tue Apr 23, 2019 8:36 am; edited 3 times in total |

I'm having a hard time finding it, but I wanna say it was around the time where Tetsuya Kinoshita (the producer I believe, thought it was the director originally) made some disparaging comments about Yuri! on Ice!!!:
This led to some very, very, not well thought out opinions in his adaptation choices too. But yeah, having a hard time finding about Sayo's comments of it now. Doesn't help doing a google search with Yuri on Ice, Sayo, and Boys Love, you get so many different things unrelated to this (as YoI tends to be mistakenly labeled under this a lot). EDIT:
In terms of Boys Love, I can't remember everything I've read/watched (only having see a handful of stuff), there was one that the name is completely blanking on me but I remember enjoying it. I saw the anime adaptation years ago of it. It's about these two adult film stars who record gay films together, who act almost in a way of tsundere towards each other, but in fact have feelings for each other. I remember the Director of the films in the show was incredibly eccentric and had a very flamboyant design. For whatever reason I can't remember the character names, or the material it was based off, but what Is saw of it, I really, really, enjoyed it a lot. |

The title you're thinking of is Embracing Love (Haru wo Daiteita). It's pretty good but also pretty dated at this point. There are loads of good titles with characters who actually acknowledge that they're into men and specifically into the man they're currently kissing these days. (There are also good titles with no kissing at all) To my understanding, the reception in Japan isn't that mixed - a lot of gay men either don't care about bl or they actually read it themselves, the same way gay women read yuri even if it isn't necessarily aimed at them. And audience aside, there are gay men working as creators too, even if perhaps under female pen names. I'm really interested in this news because they're so clearly positioning this label for the nice prestige titles - mediocre sexy stuff might pay the bills, but there's so much better out there that I'd love to see adapted. |

There is always people complaining over BL getting animated, and it usually isn't the people who watch it. BL is the genre, is the word used to refer to fictional works where two men have a romantic/sexual relationship, but sometimes I feel like people mistake it with the whole shonen-ai/Yaoi bussiness which are words just used to diffrenciante from stories where sex happens or not . Also, isnt this studio for BL animation? Meaning no real life people. BL is very much the non straight version of shoujo. You don't read shoujo thinking people actually get together like that, same with BL, most people who like it understand that the reality of LGTBQ folks is not that presented in most BL works, that is not to say the genre doesn't have mangas where there's actual realism.
To me this is great, there's so many great BL works out there, not just your typical rapey type of manga cofftencountcoff, so It'd be nice to see more works getting anime adaptions, especially because those mangas get sidelined because they don't involve the typical hardcore sex so many BL works have. I second this, I hope it can find success. |

I would love to see them make an anime adaptation of Go For It Nakamura. Since it's only one volume long, that would be an easy choice to make into a movie and it's one of the better BL manga I've read.

Now that the Banana Fish anime happened, nothing is impossible.
I would like to see Yuuutsuna no Asa (Blue Morning) animated. |
