Since you were able to write that message, it means the problem is theoretically fixed. Right now I'm just waiting to see if the server crumbles under the load or not.

Blame it on all those:
-useless one or 2 word replies like "that rock" or "cool" post.
-lame repeated topic Dub Vs Sub, Berserk Season 2, etc.
-all post asking where to download and get locked
-senseless topic that doesn't discuss anything like this
I would hope for more constructive posting and topic to save bandwidth.

I suggest mod should delete topic that break the forum rules and give warning to those who post senselessly.

Very Happy

Ah! Good to have you back! So I take it that some house cleaning has occured with some of the old threads. Can a programme be installed that deletes these old threads after a while, say 1 year of first posting?

While the number of posts and topics in the database was one of the causes of the problem, it was not to blame. After all, a database is *supposed* to contain huge amounts of data. The main culprit was a phpbb mod that contained a poorly designed SQL query. So instead of deleting a bunch of topics, the problem was solved at the root by fixing that query. Well... I *hope* it was fixed.

Well, phpBB is Open Source to begin with, so...

Consider how difficult and expensive it would be to get a propretary forum program to integrate with the rest of ANN like phpBB does. The end result would likely be either A) a huge, buggy mess, or B) no forum at all.

At the risk of going severely off topic, this is simply not true. A friend of mine was unhappy with the Open Sore (sorry, Source) stuff that was around and wrote her own forum system in her spare time that integrates nicely into the rest of her website, using Front Page extensions and proper SQL Server. It works perfectly, and in multiple languages too (English, German, etc.)

<edit> OK, I might concede the point about integrating a system like that into a completely PHP-driven site, I've never had much exposure to PHP because the company I work for is very Microsoft-oriented

Aw darn! That means I'll have to quit going through old posts every now and then. Anime smile + sweatdrop Anyway, I'm glad the forum is up and running again.

What I found particularily entertaining was with the announcement that the forums were down, there was still the option to "discuss" (although it didn't work).

Good to see everything's back up and running (theoretically)! Smile
