Funky Winkerbean has had a few anime related things in it before, such as an Akira poster, and the comic book guy watched anime at a comic book convention if I recall.

Not that I particularly approve of people getting jailed for possessing or selling drawings, but I hope the writing gets a little better as the antagonist is the same old cardboard cut-out loudmouth-narrowminded-fundamentalist-Christian-concerned-parent-cum-anti-smut-activist-or-legislator they always drag out anytime they need a conservative whipping boy.
As someone who would be a "South Park Republican" if I was American, I don't usually agree with those people, at least when it comes to "art", but I recognize their sincerity and I realize that they are more than one-dimensional bad guys. |

Unfortunately, Funky does deal a bit in stereotypes, especially the comic book shop guy. There was a storyline about him going on a date with one of the other characters, but he was shown as being notoriously cheap. However, he looks much better than he did with the previous artist.
But at least someone is paying attention to the news, as in this happened in Texas a while back. Even if it's dealt with by stereotypes. Some people need to hear about this. |

Same either, but this comic strip probally dealt with people who view manga is evil, even if they had never read a single one.

If you didn't know already, this storyline is based on what happened to Jesus Castillo in texas or whatever hellhole of the US that guy lived in. With a few changes, of course. As far as i know, there was no woman involved in that case at all.

There have been a few cases like this, I believe. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund covered them pretty extensively I think, after all, it's what they do.

It should probably be mentioned that the "conservative whipping boy" character has been in the strip for years; complaining about anything and everything is pretty much her shctick. She is kind of a stereotype (though I've known people not too different from that-even stereotypes have to come from somewhere) but at least she didn't pop into existance soley to provide a strawman for this storyline.

Actually, while the regular Funky Winkerbean guy had surgery on something, a guy who regularly draws comics did the artwork during the comic book guy dating storyline. |

I don't think the strip has any political leaning...it makes no mention of her political affiliation (just simply that she is politically active,) and besides the short schoolboard scene there's no overt religious angle either. Liberals and conservatives are both equally capable of this. While she may be a stereotype, this strip unfortunately reflects the reality of a few cases handled by CBLDF, in particular Texas vs Castillo. In the Castillo case, the original complaint was made by a House legislator, who supposedly harbored a vendetta against the store because she felt they were price-gouging her on some Pokemon trading cards. Undercover cops arrested Castillo after purchasing an original English comic adaptation based on Urotsukidoji. The prosecution's case was primarily based on the argument that the books were smut directed at kids. The jury disregarded 3 expert testamonies from the defense. The court found the material obscene, in spite of the fact that the book was nationally distributed (meaning the book should have been judged on a national standard, not just by local community standards), and the prosecution did not supply any expert rebuttals to the defense's expert witnesses. So, as far as the bit about being 'loud-mouthed, narrow-minded, anti-smut legislators,' the comic is pretty accurate. |
