It sounds like he's just trying to get attention.

I don't think he needs to try to get attention --- he gets plenty of attention all by himself.

As implied by the article, it does seem a little ironic for him to be kvetching about commercialism, though, considering his own involvement with commercial enterprises, and even the way he commercializes his own work through KaiKai KiKi, Inc.

I think the crux of his disapointment or anger or whatever is that he believes japanese artists are being treated unfairly ("exploited" according to the translation?). Ofcourse I don't have any examples or anything to say how they are being treated or reimbursed one way or the other.

To be fair, art and design are very commercial-driven. I think what he's saying is that the profit shouldn't be the primary purpose behind it, and that it is wrong to create an idealized image in order to sell to consumers.

A few years back, Dai Sato, a screenwriter for many series such as Ergo Proxy, Cowboy Bebop, and Eureka Seven had previously commented on Cool Japan, saying that anime was not "cool", that it was more akin to the hip hop industry than a massive Hollywood-esque franchise.

Maybe his issue is how ad agencies are just using the "Cool Japan" program to exploit artists and turn a profit for themselves but not profiting the artists.

Yeah, I think that's what he means too.

He can skip the "Cool Japan" middlemen.

Murakami called for advertising agencies and administrators to stop inviting him to events and interviews related to the initiative.

The artist has worked with Luis Vuitton to design a print for its handbag lines, and with rapper Kanye West to design an album cover and animate a music video.

How would you guys like it if our government put out ads that said "Come to America! We have hamburgers and Paris Hilton!". It's just cheesy and it doesn't represent the culture in general.
