Alright. I know I´m famous on these ´here forums for askin´ babyish, ¨Can you explain this¨ questions, but I´m on a keyboard in Madrid (not as bad as a Parisian keyboard, but still very different), umpteen thousand miles away from my Carolinian homestead, and I figured I´d fire ´em away.
First off -- I have just finished reading the second, thick volume of the Trigun manga. I have to say, it´s a very well-written manga, though a bit fast-paced at times. It makes Vash a heck of a lot more menacing than the anime ever did. However, from what I have -heard-, it´s only a two volume series! For the love of God, tell me it´s not true! It did end as though the 2nd book was the last book, but if that is the case, then the anime series is not only different, it´s REAL FREAKIN´DIFFERENT! I´ll admit, I haven´t seen every episode of the Trigun anime, but I´ve seen enough to know that it goes farther than that. At the end of the second manga volume, Wolfwood isn´t dead, (he doesn´t even take the canvas off his gunrack), the majority of the Gung-ho guns are mentioned, but not used, Wolfwood is himself a Gung-ho Gun, Legato is killed by Knives, Knives looks entirely different, a hole is blown in the moon, though, Wolfwood does not die, or even fight for that matter, and it says simply that noone knows what happened to Vash after Knives forced him to use the Angel Arm.
Uh-huh.
Anyways, I wanted someone to set me straight there, whatever the case.
And secondly -- I hate to ask it, but my brain is fried, and I don´t own the series itself. Can someone please explain to me the ¨before plot¨of Trigun, i.e. the seed ships, the fact that Vash, Knives, and Rem are less than human, etc..
Sorry to bother the uberotaku out there, but it´s been naggin´ me. Thanks.

Technically, the Trigun manga does end with volume 2. The magazine the manga was printed was canned, or something, but the title "Trigun" was still stuck to that magazine. So, sometime later, Nightow went to a different magazine and was forced to continue the story under the name Trigun Maximum.
I think that's how it goes.
EDIT: And as I hear, the anime is vastly different. Someone once described that the only way the Trigun anime could be continued using the manga was to remove about half of the series' episodes.

So it's a retelling... an alternate universe if you will. I still enjoyed the way the Trigun anime played out. If for no other reason, it gave you something different... and unexpected. When something different happens to your favorite character, it can stun you. It gives you a whole different perception on how the character could be played out. I was really surprised on how things ended between Legato and Vash. I liked the fact that they created a situation like this one

Shouldn't this thread be in the "Manga" forum?
I like Trigun a lot and all, but I've only seen the anime, just thought I'd let this out. But I can't help you with the manga.
So would a mod please move this to the Manga forum?

First off, Swordfish_II kinda answered your first question, but i'll make it a little clearer. The Trigun manga is longer than just 2 volumes. It just had to change it's name to "Trigun Maximum" after the second volume for the reasons Swordfish_II described.

As for the "before plot", Rem is a normal human but Vash and Knives are plants (or biomechanical life forms). They were to help the people on the Seeds ships rebuild a fully functioning environment and society on a new planet. Basically the ships were sent out just like seeds from a dandelion to expand the human race to other places in the universe away from the crowded earth.
Hope that helps

The series continues with Trigun Maximum and it concerts itself wtih Vash chasing after Knives.
Your question about the backstory has been answered so I won't go into that. As for what else you adressed I"ll take a crack at a few things.
Keep in mind the manga was made first. Wolfwood does NOT die in the manga, and in essence he IS Chapel the Evergreen. The Gung Ho Guns have another member whom you meet in Maximum, and their origins are very different as you will see once Maximum comes out.
Hope that answers all your questions.

Not to mention that the Manga is not yet finished. Trigun Maximum is still coming out.

As a matter of fact according to the new issue of Newtype Trigun Maximum vol. 1 is coming out at the end of this month, and hopefully Wolfwood will actually get to do something in the manga. And maybe Vash will get his arm back, since it was shot off in the Diablo chapter.
