He has announced the opening of "Yamato Studio" in Tokyo and said that the new Yamato project will be his last work, one which he hopes will "surpass director Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea."

They're two different genres, Yoshi-kun...Rolling Eyes

This time, Nishizaki says that all rights have been cleared to restart the project.

Hopefully, that means that Voyager can put out subbed versions of the show...

During the next nine years, the television anime spawned two television sequels and five films including the ironically named Final Yamato.

I think you're confusing that with Farewell Yamato, since Final is indeed the final one in the series, unless you count that OVA.

Given that there's already not one but two Yamato anime series since Final Yamato, that movie has lived up to its name as much as End of Evangelion has. Wink

Nishizaki is nothing without Matsumoto. If Matsumoto isn't involved in this project, it won't be worth watching, trust me.

I doubt that some old men gathering to live out their nostalgia will produce something worth watching. I rather would like the Yamato franchise being adapted by some team of new talents because old men tend to do things the same way they did 30 years ago - and nowadays is not 30 years ago, gentlemen.

Look at what Matsumoto did in the last ten or so years, it's not really worth watching either, he was at his pinnacle in the 70's and early 80's (ahhhh Ginga Tetsudou 999, Captain Harlock and Uchuu Senkan Yamato !).

I personnally trust that this project will be awesome and I have high expectations for this final Yamato !

I agree. Leiji really puts some umph into the series, so I am hoping that he will be somewhat involved with the project. And his manga series are always fun to read.

Reviving this series? As long as Deslock comes back and is ambiguously bad as ever. Wink

The Yamato franchise began with the first Space Battleship Yamato television series in 1974. The story centered on the Yamato, a spaceship built from the remains of the World War II destroyer of the same name.

The Yamato was a battleship, not a destroyer. There is a big difference. The Yamato was the largest class of battleship ever made. Check out the Wiki page for more if you are interested:

Come on, Galaxy Railways was classic Matsumoto! I for one hope he is involved in this new project as it just won't be as good without his involvement.

From everything I've heard over the years, Leiji Matsumoto won't be involved in this. He did do some character designs years ago for "aged" versions of the characters, back before the Matsumoto/Nishizaki feud. I'm not even sure if Nishizaki is allowed to use those any more.

I would love for this project to be great, but I have serious doubts. Look at his other attempts to bring Yamato back without Matsumoto's involvement: "Yamato 2520", or his Yamato rip-off "Odin - Photon Space Sailer Starlight".

Now I'm glad I'm watching (and blogging) the original Space Battleship Yamato TV series (not the Star Blazers adaptaion) now. Anime smile Hopefully, this new project will be good.
