Thanks to the ads on this site I found out that those new releases FUNimation were refering in regards to Fullmetal Alchemist are apparently the Box Sets. Which is great but as a huge fan of the series who one day hopes to own all the episodes. It's a bit annoying to know that the Box Sets are coming out so close after the original DVDs and anime itself (moreso in Canada in regards to the anime itself).

Lucky for me I only bought the first DVD and movie so far but I'm not going to buy the individual DVDs if the box sets cost less for more episodes which is the case. I checked and it's $59.99 Canadian and it includes 16 episodes. If I were to buy the four DVDs it'd cost me close to $200 for the same episodes. Now unless there's somethign worth gaining from the individual DVDs I assume it's not worth getting since I didn't plan to get any of the special editions that include the tin case and OST (though I do want the OST, it's just too much money to spend when you consider trying to get all the DVDs).

So my question is, has this ever happened to you where you buy the individual discs and then to have the box set come after? Additionally, just for reassurance, I should get the box sets instead of the individual DVS right?

It's up to you. I usually prefer the individual DVDs because the box sets almost always contain zero extras. But if that doesn't bother you then yeah, box sets are definitely a better deal.

So the box sets would merely only include the episodes nothing more? That kind of sucks, I rather enjoy the DVD extras but the issue is money. When I checked to see how much the DVDs would cost if I were to buy them all it'd be in the $400 - $500 area. The box sets if it continues to contain 16 episoes each would probably be arond $200. It's a bit of a difficult choice especially for someone like myself who's also a gamer so spending my money precisely in order to get the best possible result is most important to balance both hobbies.

EDIT: According to the site

http://www.fullmetalalchemist.com/season1_1/index.html

It has some extras but I noticed that the music video for Ready Stady Go is there, not Melissa so perhaps it won't inclue all the openins and endings like the individual DVs.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. What I sometimes do is check Rightstuf.com or Amazon.com to see what exactly the extras are. If they are just previews for other anime, then yeah box set is the way to go. But if they have like interviews or commentary or whatever, I tend to get the individual DVDs.

You had asked regarding previous experience, so I'll give you an example. I had actually purchased the Chrono Crusade box and then later found out that it had zero extras. Totally bare bones. Yeah, it was great to see the series itself, but I ended up buying the individual DVDs as well because I found it they had additional content like "Azmaria's Extra Classes" which if you haven't seen the series gives you additional insight regarding characters and stuff.

Really? Most people are the opposite. As in they get annoyied, or even pissed when a box comes out too soon after the last single volume.

I am sure there are some hardcore EVA fans floating around that would be very suited to answer that question. Razz

I don't know if Funimation always does this, but my Burst Angel box came with all the extras. (Funimation owns FMA)

Chrono Crusade is owned by ADV, whos box sets are almost always stripped of any extras.

Unless your a Princess Tutu fan! Razz

Yeah things of that nature are great to have especially for someone who's pretty much obsessed with the particular anime (what can I say, it' my favourite anime and manga of all time). Very Happy

The interesting thing is that it's still pretty recent compared to the Box Sets of DBZ though I don't know about individual DVD releases of the episodes but it took them a long time fto get a Box Set out for DBZ.. Additionally, it's probably most logical with such a long anime.

Oh, and no I haven't seen Chrono Crusade unfortunately. V_V

I should edit that, thanks... that's what I meant. The DVDs are still considerably recent in terms of their release dates as far as I know.

Like me? Yes...I got into anime with the Eva platinum discs, so luckily I didn't have to buy the series twice. (Feels like it was so long ago...) Anyway, in that particular case, the insert booklets made the individual discs a valuable buy to me. Same thing with RahXephon. With some other things, I'd be fine with just owning the episodes, with nothing else. FMA would be one, for me.

If you want the soundtracks, you can always import; they'd run about $30 each before shipping. I buy lots of import OSTs, but I know that a lot of people find them too expensive...

That is pretty expensive but for Michiru Oshima's work I wouldn't mind. The FMA Complete Best CD is about $20 so I can that but that just includes openigns and endings.

Ah, you should watch Chrono Crusade. Very Happy

Yeah, Funimation was good about that with Burst Angel. I actually had already purchased the individual DVDs but was quite tempted to buy the box set cause it looked so nice!

I also bought the Big O II individual DVDs because they had fantastic cover art, as opposed to the box set.

Well, at today's exchange rate, each one is $26 at cdjapan. If you can, though, try to find a place in the US that imports the discs for you, as shipping overseas gets expensive...unless you live in Asia or Australia, of course.

This will be difficult. In a way the extras may not seem as important as I first thought since I have the Anime Profiles book, I can get the Complete Best album and I have the FMA artbook and of course it's cheaper to get the box sets but...

These are the kind of things that will pre-occupy my mind for the remainder of my summer holiday and maybe thereafter. Laughing

I live in Canada, where anime has just recently (last year or so) started to deliver great anime other than those based off of games or are hugely popular and mainstream (Pokemon, DBZ, Digimon).

I'm excited the box set is coming out. Even though I have all the box sets and individual discs I'll probably eventually buy the box sets too. I'm that much of an obsessed freak. Rolling Eyes
