That's a pretty cool idea. Far better than what Bandai is doing here.
Oh well, the Bandai sets are still really nifty *is wearing his haruhi hair ribbons*

13 episodes on one dual-layer disc? What kind of compression are they going to be using?

pffft! that is of course if you don't have to send half of the 4 volumes back to get them swapped becuase they're faulty...
madman's track record isn't the most promising...

I agree a nice way for fans of the show to get the show (in chronological order) and TV order all while not taking advantage of the fans. Although 13 episodes on one disc? Isn't that pushing it a bit? Hell that a lot of episodes, I wonder if that will be spread out among 2 dvds. Also is this going to be using the dub from the English version?

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has 14 episodes, not 13 (that makes it worse though).

No, it'll be in Australian like most Australian releases

One of the reasons I only buy R4 discs when the price is right. I'm not overly fond of Madman's track record, nor of their NTSC to PAL conversions.
I don't see how they can fit 14 episodes of broadcast order onto one disc without seriously affecting picture quality. They must mean they're going to put it on a multi-disc single volume, because the compression level they'd have to use on a single disc would mean a very compromised picture quality. Besides, is it that expensive to spread it over three discs on one volume?

The DVD/Haruhi order would be using the Bandai dub, but I'd be surprised if the broadcast order had a dub when the R1 version won't.

well i thought to myself thats pretty stink when i first start reading it, when then it started making a bit more sense, and being a haruhiist i obviously am gonna get all 4, its just that, i still kind of wish for a special edition to be released here though, i wan all the bonuses
and also 14 episodes on 1 disk isnt that bad, I've made home made dvd of haruhi in high quality single layer i dont see why people are surprised about it, it'll be pretty good decent quality if its done on dual layer, just gonna know what settings to put

There's a difference in putting 14 fansubbed episodes on one DVD and putting 14 mpeg2 DVD-quality episodes on one DVD. I haven't even seen bootleg DVDs do any more than ten episodes, so it'll be interesting to see how this turns out, to say the least.

i was thinking that too. but i stil would rather have more discs with great quality than 1 with bad quality despite having everything. plus what about extras? will they have one disc with extras?

I'm most dubious about the "have to confirm with the licensor" bit - I mean Kodakawa/Bandai wanted to do the normal release in the broadcast order but were unable to. I wouldn't hold my breath until they get the green light...

Something needs pointing out here:
One volume does not necessarily equal one disc!
Of course, 14eps/2-discs would still mean compromising quality.
I have a hard time imagining a 3-disc single volume..

From what I read in the Madman forums, the chronological order is on a 2 disc volume. In other words, they aren't trying to cram 14 episodes on 1 disc.

The details that you are waiting for is here! I will repost this as a news item when it is 100% confirmed. These are subject to change but so far we plan to include for the Australian/NZ release of Haruhi:
Volumes 1-4 in Home Video/Chronological order just like US/JPN DVD release. These will be the DVD versions with the cleaned up animation etc. All volumes will have a reversible alternate cover featuring the JPN LE DVD art
Volume 1 ULTRA SUPER LIMITED EDITION will include
Volume 1 (duh)
"Dan Cho" Leader Arm Band
REDEMPTION VOUCHER! <- This is important as it is only going to be included in the V1 LIMITED EDITION BOX only. You will need to collect this and the 3 other vouchers (one in each volume) to redeem a special double DVD set that will contain the entire series in broadcast order.
So to make this clear again. To get a 5th volume double DVD set featuring the entire series in broadcast order (there's a space for it in the box by the way) you will need the vouchers from:
V1 and box
V2
V3
V4
Volume 1 stand alone DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY VOUCHERS!
Once you have all the vouchers you will have a window of 2-3 months to send it in to redeem the DVD. Once the offer period has expired, we will not be accepting the redemptions!
We may also have more in store for the V1 and box, so stay tuned. It's all pending approval from our licensor at the moment, but we will let you all know once we can release information!
