Thanks for the additional references. I sooo have to still see Princess Princess. The premise is definitely my type of anime. It seems like they portray the "girls" as really convincing school girls and the other characters act and behave accordingly, which sets it up for very interesting and funny situations.

Also I think Momiji from Fruits Basket deserves a special mention (looking at wookie's avatar). They never really specifically say that Momiji is a crossdresser or a transsexual boy but he is just so girly to the point of being a cute moe character that loli-shota and bishounen fans like me drool over. The ear rings and him always wearing a girl's uniform top so perfectly complete the imagery.

However, no one in the series mistakes him for a girl. Later in the manga, he fully admits that he dresses the way he does because his youthful appearance allows him to get away with it. Also, in the most recent manga volumes, Momiji spoiler[grows up (or at least catches up to the high school-age cast) and starts to dress in masculine clothing. He says something to the effect that he's a man and he needs to start dressing like one now that he's matured.]

The one I remember the best is Honjo Kamatari from Rouroni Kenshin. He looked so much like a girl, that even the other charectors in the anime were shocked to find out he was a man. Not only that but his attraction to Shishio was a defining point of his charactor.

As far as how I feel about this sort of thing in my anime. I don't really mind it much. In most long running shows there seems to be at least one person who at least has traits of the oppisite sex. If gender reversal was a major part of a series, then it would be something I would possibly avoid. Not that I really have anything against it. It's just not my thing.

I found it extremely amusing although it does play the same jokes over and over again. It has some rather interesting moments, one that really surprised me was (mild spoilers follow but it is best to play it safe) spoiler[when the three princesses are in their female attires, gothic lolita with frills and all, and Yuujiro (the yellow haired one) actually kisses Tooru (the blue haired one), making it yaoi and yuri at the same time, in a way.] If you enjoy gender reversal then you should really check Princess Princess out. And maybe the live version as well Wink

Also, I just remembered a few other examples, not as extreme as the ones already stated here but still worth mentioning:

Okane Ga Nai, being standard yaoi it plays the seme/uke dichotomy for all it's worth. So it is not surprising that Ayase, the wide eyed and frail looking uke, should be mistaken for a girl. But perhaps more relevant is the "new half" who forms part of the supporting cast. S/he is a rare case of a truly transgender character. Granted, it is mostly played for laughs but still.

Sensitive Pornograph, in a nutshell it is yaoi smut for the sake of yaoi smut. At any rate, one of the ukes is a hentai mangaka and not only do his fans think that he is a girl as he himself states that virtually all people who actually meet him think the same. Which is somewhat strange as he does not seem all that girlish but people react to him as if he did.

Kyou Kara Maou Wolfram is the most obvious example of pretty boy who borders on female but the OVA introduces a character that beats him in this respect. Sararegi does not quite corssdress but his clothes are rather colourful and the first time he appears in a sauna, of all places, Yuri mistakes him for a girl. The fact that he asks Yuri to address him as "Sara" adds more gender ambiguity to his character.

I add one more on your list...

Happiness! : A boy of the school (side-character) dresses as a girl. We see him often and it's pretty funny.

A more recent one (and I can't believe i'm pointing this one out, I hate the show) is Ren from To Love-RU. When he/she sneezes, he/she changes sex, often leading to much impromptu ecchi fun. Except it's not funny, not really Razz

The actual plot device of gender switching doesn't bother me in the slightest. The only reason it irks me in To Love-RU is because it's used as a cheap gag, just another excuse to show a character naked, usually with Rito's head somewhere between her breasts.

Oh yeah, I knew it I had forgotten one... It's true that ToLoveRu uses a lot of cheap gags... I continue to watch that serie only to see how it'll end... When I start something, I always finish it! Well, when he changed at school, that was hilarious (well for me)... but only the first time! But as you said, it enhances only the stupidity of this show!

Well, for the moment I can't add another one... I have a blank in my mind...

I didn't read every single post of this thread word by word because I don't particularly like the genre very much, so I apologise if this has been linked before.

Here is a list of anime (and manga) "with crossdressing, drag, transgender, transsexual, transvestite content".

Another character that fits the description is Makoto from Minami-ke, he dresses as a girl (to become mako-chan) to hide his identity from chiaki

I always enjoy these series, I find them interesting because, in many ways I don't really conform to a masculine image, so I guess I identify with what the characters go through, sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be female.

Well most that i know have been mentioned except

St Luminous Mission High School - Ryu has to live as a girl if he wants to stay with his best friend.

My Hime - one of the girls is living as a boy to hide that they are a hime (if i remember correctly)

I have just finished watching kashimashi and i found it very moving they really did justice and managed to convey emotions easily just by the look in the eye etc, a wonderful bit of animation if you ask me.

hmmm... another one by the same mangaka who did princess princess is day of revolution which is entirely based around the gender-change of the main character. spoiler[and it kind of serves as a bit of a prequel to princess princess, since megumi ends up being a side-character there.]

Battle Athletes OVA , I'm not sure about the series as I never watched Victory (A retelling of the same story but with the characters personalities changed, I hear the OVA I have watched is better) Anyway, spoiler[there is a gender switcher in there, although the person in question didn't realize as they were raised the wrong gender.]

What about Sai from Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro? spoiler[His cells are constantly changing, so he DOES have the ability to turn into a woman. Plus, he can't remember his original form, so we really have no idea if he was a girl to begin with (he just takes the form of a boy, even though it probably wasn't what he originally looked like).]

I am actually a straight guy (I have a girlfriend whom I am sexually attracted to plus I don't find men sexually attractive) who wishes he was born a woman. Its not something I decide rather it is something that haunts me.

All that aside, I love gender switching anime and manga. One manga that I found was pretty good was Yours and My Secret The story was about feminine boy and a tomboyish girl switch bodies.

There was also Akane-chan Overdrive where a boys soul accidently become rerouted into a girl who was in a coma. It was also decent.
