I'm not sure if this applies to Internet radio stations that broadcast j-pop, j-rock, and the likes, but it looks like it'll apply anywhere within the US and since I didn't see a thread about it here, here is the latest news on Internet radio laws.
To cut the story short, the new rates that Internet radio stations must pay for copyrights completely disregards their financial situation and became a pay-per-play system from a percentage revenue system. This means that instead of paying 10% of profits, they have to pay prices that are fixed, which increases each year, at rates that no Internet radio station could ever afford. If this continues, you will see the same phenomenon that happened with television stations - a few major corporations owning all of Internet radio broadcasting. My college radio station is feeling the crunch from this. This is a horrible, horrible idea, and will cripple the industry.

I don't even know how the court could pass a law like this. My guess is that they're not stupid, which means they obviously expect that existing Internet radio stations won't be able to pay these new royalty rates. I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't an attempt by large corporations to dig their pockets in Internet broadcasting. I'm an avid listener of Kawaii Radio and Animenfo Radio; I'm worried because both of their listener base is much too small to be paying royalties, if they indeed have to pay them.

Well what can you really expect...much of the music industry of today loses so much money because everyone is downloading free music and not buying their products. The industry was in a slump ever since like pirate software was available. Since they can't make as much money as they expect they make internet radio as their target for profits. Also if the station goes down it would probably make people buy or steal the products.

Actually, this article should enlighten you to as exactly how much the music industry is actually "losing" due to piracy. I still don't understand why the price is so ridiculous, making it looks as if the law wants every single independent Internet radio station to go out of business. |

One of them represents my state! I guess sending the message around helped a lot. Now all that's left is for the bill to be passed. :)

Japanese artists are represented in the US by ASCAP (the composers) and Sound Exchange (for the labels). So, this does affect japanese music and anime soudntrack webcasts.
Other than supporting the new bill, you can join use webcasters in a day of silence. On May 8, all music-related activities must stop. I first heard about this several months ago when visiting KeiichiNet's website for the first time in quite awhile. I remember how much joy I got from listening to KeiichiNet during long days working as a temp secretary (with absolutely no work to do--it was torture), and the thought of them having to shut down is painful. Particularly given their fantastic Retro block everyday and the Songs from the Revolution double-plays featuring Utena themes. They have such a great mix of music (particularly since they've scaled back on the [in my opinion] horrid LKJ mixes) and I often learn about new artists I like from them, then head off to CD Japan to make purchases.
