Dragon Half. Hands down.

Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura, Project A-Ko, and Azumanga Daioh are definitely up there, too. Fullmetal Alchemist, too...while it isn't expressly a comedy, when they do the funny stuff, I'm usually laughing out loud.

And while most of the series isn't really comedy, I do have to say I've never laughed so hard as the first time I saw episode 7 (dubbed) of the original Tenchi-Muyo! OAV series. "I've got magic fingers!" Laughing

[EDIT: Seeing as how everyone but the author put in some really good effort, I decided to let the thread live. You, jgreen, are the new "leader" of this thread. -TK]

What are the funniest animes you've seen?
(for humor fans only Smile )

You seem pretty new to these forums, so here's some advice. Please be more specific. The rules require you to make your posts as detailed as possible. Otherwise, I'll have to lock your thread for violation of Rule #3. Please edit your opening post by the end of the day and add a lot more details (same goes for everyone else; no listing, or I'll delete your post).

Why do you think those titles are funny? Is it just the expressions on their faces, the character chemistry, situational humor, the voice acting, or something else?

The more serious you represent yourself, the more serious everyone else will be willing to take you. Thanks Smile.

I think I'd probably have to say Puni Puni Poemy. While the ecchi-flavored humor doesn't really appeal to me, the sheer maniac pace of everything else makes up for it. A main character who doesn't use her name becuase the VA can't stay in character? An action-packed battle interrupted by a wife who wants the tax return finished? Great stuff.

(Well, some of the dirter jokes I did really like... like Shii using Poemi's head as a place to rest her chest... "Shii, you'll suffocate her! Remember the cat! Laughing )

For me, it's a three-way tie between FMP: Fummofu, Azumanga Daioh, & Ouran High School Host Club. All of them have multiple scenes that will get me laughing out loud, which is rare for me with anime. Second place goes to Ichigo Mashimaro; I can't help but chuckle every time they cut to Miu lying face down after saying something she shouldn't have.

As for me, I love comedic anime, almost any style and among my favorites are:

Azumanga Daioh: The series just has a knack for turning even the most redundant gags and turning around and making them look fresh and honestly humorous. And I also love that it could take the smallest thing and turn it into a funny spot, like I crack up each time I watch Osaka follow the spot in her eyes totally oblivious the the mayhem around her.

Excel Saga: Can't have a thread about comedic anime without mentioning the king, or maybe queen, of parodies, especially if Puny Puny Poemy is being talked up. Excel takes any given genre and not only puts it's own spin on it, it takes it through a spin cycle. But the parodies alone don't make the show, random humor, random humor, and random humor; almost anything can happen at any given moment, even when you come to expect something it finds a way of doing the exact same thing in a way you didn't even see coming. There wasn't an episode that didn't make me laugh rather loudly at least once.

FLCL: Random? I think the word is a bit light for this series. Insane characters, however, also add their mark in this baby. I still laugh everytime I hear Haruko yell "itadakimasu!" right before she whacks Naota with her guitar. But it is not just Haruko, among the entire cast there aren't more than a couple who don't have at aleast a few screws loose. Heck even the ones that seem normal will eventually do at least one thing that makes you give a double take.

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu 'Madcaps' is the word here, which would describe almost anyone in this series. Also, when an average line consists of things like, "no exploding, please," you know something isn't quite right. Whether it's the great shoe box terrorist mystery, setting traps to avoid being "captured" while modeling for a portrait, or seeing someone use the latest in defense gear to "fumoffu" someone's ass, almost every episode offers more than just chuckles.

Pani Poni Dash!: Yeah, I know it is a bit silly, but I think that for this show 'silly' works really well. Rebecca is insane, but she fits right in with all the escapees from the assylum in this class. The weird characters, random humor and parodies along with some really zany pop culture references all make this show interesting as well as funny. However the silliness rules over all and, as I said, really works for this show and makes it even more fun to watch.

Muteki Kanban Musume a.k.a Ramen Fighter Miki: Some may not like this show but I think it is brilliant in its comedy. Outstanding timing, use of secondary characters to avoid overplayed storylines, not only making fun of other shows but making fun of itself, random fun, slapstick; this small show really knows its comedy and best of all, the creators know how to use it and time it beautifully. Usually when I watch shows they tend to be funnier at the beginning but this is one of the few that made me laugh more as it went along. I don't know if the creators planned it this way or if they just let it develop as it went, but regardless it made for a hell of a funny series.

Ranma ½: As many know this is my favorite show, however it's not my favorite comedy-wise, but I still have to say that I love a lot of the humor. Whether it is some outlandish and often outrageous martial art, another crazy girl(or guy) either trying to kill or marry Ranma or both, or just some random joke that comes out of nowhere, there aren't many episodes that don't offer at least a few laughs. And the cast of what seems like hundreds is full of wacky oddballs, madcaps, and certifiable characters who can come out of anywhere with any number of random possibilities.

I love all three of those! But, I haven't seen Ouran yet but, I've read the manga.

FUMMOFU is hilarious! Between the serious communication between Bunta-kun and Pony Man, the visually-impaired martial arts expert and his "competition" with Sousuke and the results from the aftermath, and the rescue of Kaname. Just fun, fun, fun. But my personal favorite was the "Outdoor Art Class." WILD!

Dear, Zany AD. The show that proves that there is a difference between ADD and ADHD http://anime.thenexxus.org/stuff/20050204-2150-442.jpg. And also teaches you to be VERY careful as to what car you get into. Poor, poor Chiyo-chan! This series is just over-the-top but it isn't annoyingly over-the-top.

Don't really tend to watch all that many comedy anime (I like my angsty stuff to be honest), but the following shows did make me chortle;

Dragon Half - this show deserved more than it's two episode outing IMO. Mink is probably the cutest & dumbest half dragon in existance, but my favourite characters were Damaramu, the knight with the smallest brain in the world (I, Damaramu, shall forever regret this. *keels over*), & Dick Saucer, the singing, dragon-slaying knight/pop idol sensation. The visual gags, the silly songs, the mad cap adventure to buy tickets for the concert, all made for a hilarious adventure that just didn't last long enough. A very funny little show.

Azumanga Daioh - A slice of (school) life series about a group of school girls & the trials & tribulations of their 3 years in high school. Doesn't sound like a comedy, but the characters & the situations they get themselves into are a riot. From Osaka's outright weirdness (she has to be on LSD man), to Sakaki's obsession with cats who in turn hate her, & their homeroom teacher Yukari, who REALLY needs to grow up, this show had me in stitches from episode one onwards; I laughed so hard that my sides hurt after watching this series. Awesome show, one that I have recommended to all my anime-loving friends. Anime smile

Project A-Ko - a parody of all things quintessentially related to anime. Cute, angry red head with super human strength - Check! Giant robots that transform (& so squishing the user inside) - check! The Captain Harlock wannabe - Check! The female reject from Fist of the North Star - Check! And the list goes on & on. When I first saw this movie way back in the early 90's, I tried to sit there & count how many series the movie lampooned, but I couldn't stop laughing at the zany antics of A-Ko & B-Ko when they were battling it out over C-Ko (why would anyone want this ditz?). The follow up OAV's & movies didn't really hit the same spot for me, but I do have fond memories of the original movie.

Lol, so true, and that's exactly why I come here. Very Happy

The first episode of Excel Saga goes down as my all time funniest anime, well anime moment at least. The fact that spoiler[Excel dies so many time in the first few minutes] always cracks me up beyond reason.

There's such a long list and many titles like Puny Puny Poemi, Azumanga Daioh, Ouran, Pani Pony Dash have already been said. some other good comedy titles would be Love Hina, Excel Saga, You're Under Arrest, DearS, Miami Guns and Girl's Bravo.

DearS and Girl's Bravo both have more adult humor along the line of Puni and Excel. DearS is a bit more serious as well. Girl's Bravo is just insane. Kiriyama is a trip as he constantly tries to get with Miharu. Lots of jiggle and top nudity though so 17+.

Love Hina is insane. Poor Keitaro always winds up in the wrong place at the wrong time and Naru makes him pay for it. How many times can a man be punched like that without having brain damage????

You're Under Arrest is an old show. It's your classic buddy cop show but the buddies are 2 very crazy gun toting girls. They are freakin crazy and shoot everything in their way. Older but still very fun with good action.

Miami Guns is You're Under Arrest meets Excel Saga. Crazy off the wall buddy cop comedy but more insane. If those shows had a bastard child it would be Miami Guns. I mean it's got a little gator that likes women's panties......

People mentioned Excel but forgot the 2 main reasons it's so funny. Pedro and Nebeshin. Who can't love Pedro and his sexy sexy wife. "Gomezzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!" Nabeshin is Bob Ross with the fro crossed with James Bond. Give bond a 70's Lupin look and add a fro and there ya go. He's seriously Bad Azz though.

For a brand new comedy, by the people of Excel and Puny Poemy, check out Nerima Daikon Brothers. It's a musical!!!!

Doesn't this imply that everybody checks these forums more than once a day? Hate to break it to you, Tony, but not all of us have that kind of free time.

And can I blaspheme for a second and say that I don't find Excel Saga particularly funny? I bought the entire series sight unseen (all used at a Saturday Matinee, thank god) based entirely on reputation and the fact that every year ACen is PACKED with Nabeshins (before I knew of Excel Saga, I just thought Adult Swim was creating a LOT of Lupin fans...heh). I keep trying to give it an honest chance, but I never make it farther than episode 3 before my attention wanders to something else. It's just too crazy for the sake of being crazy, and while the odd turns it take sometimes surprise me, they never make me LAUGH.

I tried watching the first episode of this on Y**T*** just to see if it was my kind of thing, and after about 5 minutes it was putting me to sleep because nothing was happening. Does it ever pick up the pace? I don't have anything inherently against slow-paced, character driven comedy series (I love Azumanga Daioh, for example) but the first episode of this one at least is too slow even for my tastes. How's the rest of the series compare?

I am very amiable when it comes to settling this kind of situation. I've locked many threads, and those who are willing and rational enough to listen will send me a PM to try and work things out.

If all goes well and we come to an agreement, I'll unlock the thread, let them fix their mistakes, and everything progresses as it once was.

While the rules and implentation of them may seem strict, I feel it's the best and most effective way to deal with these kinds of problems. If you haven't noticed, a lot of the regulars here do visit on a daily basis. Those who make, maybe, half a dozen posts with one-liners and a total disregard to ever reply to their own topics usually don't stay long anyway.

It's too bad if they're not willing to at least take these forums seriously. I don't mean to turn new people away, but it's all on them if they won't even reconsider a little of what I and other users try to tell them. It's simply the nature of this site, and it reflects among the staff and users here.

In any case, if this ends up getting locked and the user PMs me with some kind of willingness to reconcile their mistake, then I'm all for it. This isn't a "one strike, and you're out" kind of mentality I'm running here. I just expect people to learn from their mistakes. If they don't want to, that's their prerogative.

The first anime I think I would have to put up here would be School Rumble because I love the way Harima tries to get Tenma's atteion and tries to confess his love to her. He is an absolute choke artist! He freakin panics when he tries to tell her his feelings and here is lil ol Tenma with this smile on her face and he's freakin out on the inside. The love polygon in this show just keeps makin me laugh and the best part for me is Takano's randomness towards the end of the second season. *sighs* I wonder if there is any news on when the third season will come out.

I have to agree that Fummoffu was funny too. I love the way Chidori would dropkick Souske in the head after he panicks over the simplest situation. It was a weird way to buffer an otherwise serious show.

Azumanga Daioh pretty much speaks for itself. My favorite episode is when they do the cafe for the school festival and Chioh-chan is dressed up as a penguin. Everyone's reaction to her when they saw her had me rofl. Especially Nyamo's. Thats was gold.

I agree. Parts were funny, but overall, it wore on me.

While it does pick up a bit, it's essentially the same. There's another girl introduced, & they take some time to get her up & running in the cast, so that chews up an ep or two. It never gets to the same pace as Azumanga as far as slapstick, everything is pretty low key.

I can tell you that it took a second attempt from me to watch all of it, I too was bored initially. As the show went on, though, it grew on me to where I ended up really liking it. I would say to give the whole series a shot before deciding.

I too will have to cast a vote for Project A-ko. Wonderful parodys and crazy comedy.
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi- With the exception of some necessary serious moments to drive the story, this series disobeys all limits and knows no bounds. Every episode seems to have a different theme, and really pulls no punches. Especially the spoiler[Dragonball Z reference, where they really made fun of it.].
Girls Bravo- A little heavy on the ecchi side of things, but it has some of the best one-liners I have ever heard.
Full Metal Panic Fumoffu- again, many have mentioned this one and I feel I must do the same. There is plenty of refreshing, origional comedy. There are many times where series "borrow" punchlines from other series, Fumoffu doesn't have to.
