Do they NEED to be anime-related? Or is it just a cooincidence that everyone here has one that is?

As long as it's not offensive or vulgar, your avatar can be anything you want. It's just that since this is an anime forum, most users prefer using anime characters as avatars.

At least mine isn't (at this moment).
And if you take a look at the ANN staff list, you'll see that I'm not the only one. Take a look in e.g. the anime forum, and you'll see that what you show is completely at your desire (given of course the size restrictions, and offensive content limitations). |

Mine definetly aren't. I've been doing video game avatars for the past six months, plus I've had Jason Vorhees for my avatar as well. Unless Admin has specified it in the rules, you should be okay. Heck, if the staff have avatars that aren't anime, then I don't see why not.
