Huh, I'd completely forgotten about the Mylene subplot in Dynamite 7. I only remembered that the rest of the band didn't really feature in this OVA. Just checked eps.2 and 3, and yeah, that part can easily be omitted without affecting the story at all.
Dynamite 7 may be just a sidestory to Macross 7, but it's definitely very Macross. It fits somewhat into the alternate-retelling tradition that started with DYRL and continued with the Frontier and Delta movies, and there are some similarities with Macross Zero. At least one of the creators clearly had a thing for South(-East) Asian coastal settings too, as shown again in Delta. The Macross 7 movie is like the OVA eps., just a silly/cool sidestory. With some added detail for long-time fans of Macross and the Jenius family. I don't think you've mentioned the Macross 7 Plus bonus material? They're really short bits, but they add some background details to the Macross 7 characters. |

I'm of two minds about this.
On one hand, I have an aversion to any editing of anime releases. And the same happens here. On the other, the content that was edited out is extremely grating, and annoyed me. Otherwise, watching Macross 7 was one of my top anime experiences. |

Strange that the streaming version of the Movie looks like that. I recall the version on the Japanese BD looking pretty much the same as the TV/OVA.
This line perfectly sums up why Basara is such an infuriating non-character. It's almost breaking the fourth wall and winking at the audience's frustrations with our supposedly main character. Though as many have already said Mylene often feels like the true main character in Macross 7. Although in retrospect, I think Dynamite might be my favorite part of Macross 7. It just feels very different an unexpected, with the new planet setting, the new alien species, the hunt for space whales... It's just really bizarre, but I thought it was enjoyable. And obviously at 4 episodes it's story is self-contained and doesn't drag like the main TV series often does. It also isn't too short like the Movie, which comes off feeling a bit silly, forgettable, and pointless. |

i would not be surprised if this do not sell well because of the whole dynamic 7 controversy which to this day pisses of a lot of old school macross fans!
especially in other anime based fan forums like MAL! |
