Man... I only ever went to AFest a couple of times, but it's sad to see it go. I had a good time every time I went. I guess it's good that they had the foresight to end on a good note instead of letting the convention turn into a disaster.

It really sucks to see how many fan-run events are getting priced out of existence by hotels and convention centers that focus on corporate-sponsored events instead.

Yeah, I'm sad to see conventions becoming less "for fans by fans" and more "for sponsors/resellers by sponsors". The amount of people lining up to get Funkos signed to resell is just out of control.

So long, AnimeFest. I was there during the great Yuri on Ice Hostage Walk and a smattering of other years. I would have loved to have supported you more recently, but you eschewed inviting mangaka, anime artists and seiyuu for VTubers and so called influencers, and that choice is probably what bit you in the end.

Edit - So, my friend decided to check out their IRS tax filings because, as a 501(c)(3), their returns have to be made public.

They have not filed a tax return since 2021. If they fail to do so this year, they no longer fall under charity status.

They have been pretty much surviving off the revenue they earned when the Yuri on Ice mangaka was their guest. In 2016, they earned 500,000. In 2017, they earned 1 million. In 2020, they took a loss of $15K whereas in 2021, they took in approximately $250K.

So, in short, con hasn't filed a return in years and seems to be operating at a loss. Closing up shop makes sense because they'd otherwise have a pretty hefty bill to pay.
