Good, this deal going through would have been disastrous for the publishing industry

And another attempt to get big enough to argue with Amazon fails.

Amazon currently controls so much of the distribution and sales of books that it basically tells the publishers what they can charge for some categories of books, mostly best sellers. The publishers don't like this as it can hurt profitability. A few years back four or five publishers got together to come up with a standard pricing system of their own that they could force on Amazon. The Supreme Court shot that down as "co-operation in restraint of trade".

Paramount need to sell Simon & Schuster but will now have to accept the lower bid from a former runner up.

Simon & Schuster will be sold by Paramount just now it will be to the runner up who bid less than Penguin last time.
