The director also goes by the label "Paprika Girl". This movie is based off of Reddit stories she told on r/fatpeoplestories. The character of Paprika is based off of PG and described as "Hungarian-American Jew with bright red hair. Normal sized., who is described as a normal-size".

I can honestly say that the premise and the source material (Reddit) makes this 1 of the most "WTH, Japan?" for any anime that I have ever read about.

twitter.com/PaprikaGirl_JP/status/1567359783669473280 has a link to the original English-language novella that you can get on Kindle.

Huh that's a really interesting history actually, I guess in the end this is no different than adapting from a Narou story except she's directing her own adaptation.

Edit: After seeing AsleepBySunset's comment I actually went and read the reddit post, that's a LOT meaner and more disgusting than I thought it was just seeing the comments

I just skimmed the reddit post, and it's literally just a cyberbullying story, painting Chibiham as a freak for you to gawk at, down to referring to her as "planet sized". I presume the author is supposed to be the "good weeaboo who learns the language and culture" archetype while chibiham is supposed to be the "incompetent fat and ugly weeaboo". Unless there's a twist at the end, I'm incredibly saddened that something like this exists.

I might skim it again to see how disappointed I am at humanity.

Yeah I wonder if this will get stopped before it sees the light of day. Just because the director is an american doesn't mean anyone should give this shit a pass to be racist/sexist/etc-ist.

Thanks. I hate everything about this. The premise is disgusting, the character designs are trash fat-shaming, and just everything about the plot's origin turns my stomach. No.

Wanted to be optimistic about this since works adapted from internet stories can be amusing, but after seeing that reddit post, I'm actively avoiding this curbside litter. Can't imagine harboring that much ill will toward a family member just because they're heavy. If nothing else, I'm glad its screening is limited to a tiny theater room; rest assured few will ever have the displeasure of watching it.

It won't. You know it won't. If EX-ARM could make it past the post-production stage, so can this, and many things worse.

Things might seem different in America where most of the country is overweight, but in Japan being overweight is very frowned upon. It takes up a lot of precious space on narrow train cars, shopping centers, and stores and inconveniences everyone else. Japan insituted a Metabo Law in 2008 that ran until 2015 to help stem this tide which basically punished people for being fat and fined their employer or local government if its citizens failed to maintain a healthy BMI. Japan has one of the lowest obesity rates so it seemed to be very effective here.

George Carlin would be smiling down on this, I'd like to think.

Does this qualify as the first offical Reddit anime? We've got anime from 2ch and other Japanese forums, but this might be the first time Reddit stories get an anime.

I've read through quite a few of the Reddit chapters and from what I gathered it seems like someting you'd see come out years ago back when things like Scott Pilgrim and Megatokyo were huge. Given the dates of those old posts I suppose it's not that far off. It's basically about an American girl in Japan with her stereotypical cringy, fat, weeaboo cousin tagging along getting into crazy and funny situations. All apparently based on true stories, with some degrees of embellishments. It leans into a lot of American stereotypes Japan has about us and cringe humor. Although not all the chapters take place in Japan. The School of HAMS spin-off is a prequel set during their high-school years in rural America. I think I liked the prequel more than the main series to be honest. I could see it being pretty funny, although mo-cap CG isn't great so I dunno how they'll do comedic timing and what not.

It's no surprising some people are mad. It's basically a giant middle finger to certain groups. You're enjoyment of this is going to come down to which side of that fence your on. If you loved those old shows that gave the finger to political correctness like The Simpsons, Duckman, Seinfeld, South Park, MadTV, Married With Children, George Carlin, old SNL, etcertera, you'll probably like this since its those mixed with the Ameri-Manga style of webcomics. Two characters, Fatterina and Flaberella, are basically the personification of Tumblr/Twitter artists who take others peoples art and 'fix' them by changing the skin color/clothing/weight of it. They were the most obnoxious characters I've read so far, but that's just because they were so accurate to certain posts I've seen online.

Exchange student Paprika is living her new life happily in Japan with her best friend Juicy, when one day her cousin Chibiham asks to come visit for a month in the summer. Not having seen her in some time, Paprika heartily agrees. What she is dealt with is far worse than she could have imagined - her entitled, ill-mannered, boorish relative takes Japan by storm, ready to plow down anything that stands in the way of her seeing the country exactly the way she imagined it. Can Paprika and Juicy tame the wild American before the month is up? A funny, true story about an overbearing tourist in Japan

This sounds like a gender-swapped version of Logan Paul's infamous trip to Japan.
