All of them are connected; most of them happen immediately after the previous game, and Trails to Azure even happens at the same time as Cold Steel 1 & 2. Most people would recommend starting with the first game, Trails in the Sky, because they do all tie together and later games have a lot of references to the previous ones.

They're all quite deeply connected. They're set in the same world, and usually come in 2-4 game sets (namely: Sky, Zero/Ao, Steel), with each set focusing on a different part of the world and a different 'main' cast, but often with minor-to-major reappearances of characters from other games. Institutions (political, religious, etc) from each game also figure prominently in every other game, and they appear to be building towards an overarching central plot, even while each individual 2-3 game set tells its own mostly self-contained story.
They're a bit weird in this regard; they kind of remind me of the sort of "shared universe" Brandon Sanderson seems to be building into his fantasy novels, except in videogame form. I can't think of any other games that have been similarly ambitious.
