This is very interesting to know.

I do wonder how the peeps in Hollywood would react to this. Will they play ignorant of this movie's success? Will they call this movie's success a fluke because of the pandemic. Or will they actually take the time to look at some of the aspects of what made this movie a success and maybe try to emulate that.

They're probably going to chalk it up to being the pandemic; which to be honest is probably accurate. I don't think this is the top movie world wide in a non pandemic year. Too many tent pole hollywood films were either moved to 2021 or aired simultaneously in both theaters and home on demand.

Obviously this also means it's the first non-US animated film to be the top animated film worldwide
(The year's top animated film worldwide has always been US-animated)

Gz to Demon Slayer! Maybe the US should learn a lesson or two here. Why the oscars had the lowest rating in its history while an anime that covers 5 chapters of a children's manga is outselling them all?

I'm still trying to figure out why the hell this is a children's manga but great for Demon Slayer.

There is no way that Demon Slayer would be the number one movie in a non-pandemic year. Its 2020 box office would have put it around 15th in 2019 assuming it didn't make less money with the increased competition.

The movie's performance is unquestionably a pandemic-related aberration, but even so, I don't doubt that the numbers it pulled even in the U.S. are going to raise some eyebrows. It may increase the chances of more accessible anime movies getting broader releases in the future.

That would be nice. My local theater only plays anime movies that are released through Fathom Events. Anything else and I am lucky if it plays within 50 miles of my house.

Could've been more impressive if the movie pull that off in a normal year.

These things can both be true at once:
1) Demon Slayer would not have been the #1 movie worldwide in a normal year.
2) Demon Slayer is a massive box office success, and in a normal year its performance in the US relative to other anime movies historically would have been even better.

I hope that Hollywood is not thinking about making a live-action adaptation of Demon Slayer. At least they could try making an animated movie with an emphasis on action instead of comedy, the only recent production that comes close is Spider-Verse.
