Thanks For pointing out Shimoneta I'm going to watch it now. Episode 4 has a big WTF! scene.

If anything, this article proves that the phrase "Widget Series" (shorthand for "Weird Japanese Thing") has either died out or is used nowhere outside of TV Tropes.

As it's straight-up porn, the only really wtf thing about that is that somehow along the licensing path the English title got changed to Hot Space Cowboys.
I know 2020 has been messing with our sense of time, but I assure you Aug 2 wasn't last week. Poll results here for those who don't like being coerced into watching a YT video. I almost added Osomatsu-san to the poll but decided since Takahiro Sakurai was the lead for 2 of the 5 WTF anime already, I'd let him rest. I don't think I've ever watched all of Cromartie before, just bits and pieces. I think I'll do that now. Last edited by Gina Szanboti on Fri Sep 18, 2020 4:31 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Wacky and/or obscene comedies, truly the height of weirdness in entertainment. This is kind of disappointing for this site.

If this was a list from twenty years ago, it would be mostly Gainax works and Utena. Our definition of WTF in terms of anime has come a long way!
I added Mind Game to the poll, since it more than belongs (it's also one of my all-time favorites). Kudos to whoever added Detroit Metal City as well. |

Eh, I'll grant you School Days since it appeared to be one kind of show and then did a sharp turn into an entirely different genre. But the others just struck as me as weird and didn't warrant a WTF in my book. Cromartie is great, but it's just one of the great weird comedies from the time like Excel Saga or Hare + Guu. They can live happily with the more modern Teekyu and Pop Team Epic. For me, a WTF show is one where the whole concept is a bizarre mashup of parts that don't generally go together or when a show pulls the rug out and becomes a different show that is incongruous with the other one. Weird concept alone doesn't make necessarily do it for me (although Mysterious Girlfriend X would certainly be a contender for that). I aim for things that make me ask "WTF did I just watch?" for my selections.
So for me, I'd pick: -Penguin Memories: It's a totally serious war movie like The Deer Hunter told with cartoon penguins who are also real-life beer mascots. I cannot wrap my head around a beer company sponsoring a movie where their mascots shoot each other to death and give our main character PTSD. It's also a musical. -Apocalypse Meow (Better known by a title I can't write here): CG cute bunnies in wartime. -Doggie Poo: The touching story of a dog turd. -Catnapped!: Kids follow their dog to the world of cat people. Dog turns into a giant cartoon monster and the villain turns people into balloons when she scratches them with her claws. -Cat Soup: Surrealism at its finest. I love this movie, but it's very much a WTF sort of thing. |

Favorite WTF thing is Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat In Space. I really wanted the planned trilogy to go through. Cute, Post-modern, violent.
Cat Soup is up there but honestly makes me sleepy. Alien 9 is another one that had promise and just fizzled out in anime and manga. Too bad. The one I thought "they'll certainly say..." was Arakawa Under The Bridge The first anime that made me think "This is Crazy, I Love It!" was Excel Saga. although... before I was any sort of real fan, you know what made me think anime was strange? Ranma 1/2 OH! The WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU? anime... Eiken |

Samurai Flamenco. Episode 8. Obviously
That episode of Vatican Miracle Examiners where they just told a one-off story about a kid who's entire family was murdered by santa with an axe. Episode 12 of Fire Force, which I watched today, featured a scene that probably shouldn't be in the same show as talking moles and magically disappearing clothing. Also should probably put a trigger warning in front of it like that one ep of SAO Alicization. That scene in Fuuka, were Fuuka is about to get hit by a car but then the car stops and she's fine. I was like "Huh. Weird" and my cousin who I was talking to on skype asked if I wanted to know how that scene played out in the manga and that threw me for a loop! Speaking of trucks, the one in Zombieland Saga And finally, the reveal about Itachi in Naruto |

Fair enough. I said I was going to watch me some Cromartie and I did. I about choked on my soda when in Episode 7 they're watching a tv show called "Pootan" and it reminded me that Sakurai is also in Butt Detective (there's the WTF tie-in to keep OT) playing this character. Seriously, no dignity for the wicked. |
