Is the Children of the Whales manga better than the anime?

I was really interested in the setting, but the show itself never really captured me. Is the manga better? I'm thinking about picking it up on the RightStuf sale.

As a side question, does anyone have recommendations for reviews of later issues of manga? The only thing ANN tends to cover is the first issue or two.
