Episode 4

I enjoyed the courtesan character, Veronica. If a genuine character, I think that her take was a pretty okay one. And maybe based off of how the hopeful suitor reacted by kind of getting possessive and questioning who the portrait was for after hearing one was being made, her distancing herself from him might even fit. Even though she called her profession as a prostitute sinful, there seemed to be pride there, and I think that there would be nothing wrong with it as long as she did so by her own choice and made herself happy. The man though expressed that he had strong feelings of jealousy when he saw her laughing with other men, which felt like a strong incompatibility with her work that requires being intimate with other men.

Maybe torturing him to the point that he feels like he is going crazy is not a cool move, but have more love for the woman that was choosing to live her own life as a courtesan, than the guy that apparently can't stand her with anyone else and tries to pursue her anyway.

I am watching the show by the way. Generally not been too interesting, but the more feminist elements along with history are interesting. Assassins Creed 2 being one reason I have a love of this time period. I don't really care for Arte's infatuation with Leo, I keep thinking of Leonardo da vinci and how he was supposedly gay.

Episode 12 (finale)

While I am not too surprised as a story beat that Arte decided to return from Venice so that she could feel like she would earn her position, I feel like it kind of has its holes. Arte was not simply being privileged in the art world because she was a woman, through the show she has been pretty disadvantaged for it, where chances were that she would have had a much easier time if she was a man. This kind of feels disingenuous that Arte should feel compelled to turn her back on finding a single situation where she found a patron who was willing to use it as part of a boon to as he said to help push her forward.

Leo mostly took her on a whim, and I think that it was not even him taking it seriously that it was pretty much by accident that she took his challenge to become his apprentice. Although maybe not the most neat story that Arte might have decided not to return to her teacher, it kind of feels like it would have been a bit on theme that like Veronica she would be using what she has in opportunities to make her way. I also find the last bit a bit strained in how the ceiling mural was hired Leo specifically to do it, and he drew it, but all the other apprentices were helping Arte finish it, and somehow her own touch was still there despite the half a dozen other people. While the idea of Arte changing the minds of all of the other apprentices is nice sentiment, I am not sure what to think of it so clear cut, the idea that she has at this point managed to convince them all.

What I will say is that I liked the show more as it went on. I do have a rather strong feminist streak, I think that it started out as a little clumsy, or at least I thought that it might be a bit too open to things like token gestures, that she would just cut her hair and break conventions and that would be enough. While I still don't think that it did all well in places, I think it did generally well in not giving her too easy of a time, also showing other women, and would say that I even accepted it when she finally found a situation where she got a chance because she was a woman of noble upbringing. Especially fond of the character Catalina, the bratty oft inelegant noble daughter, for how it reflected how Arte was at the start, the chains put on women like them, and maybe how they might move forward.

That they had interest in art and cuisine respectfully, things they are both told not for girls, but you would be hard pressed to argue nowadays that they are not without feminine elements. I also like that the show steered away from a romance between Arte and Leo, which really feels like it would have distracted from the story of a woman finding her own way in a world that says she should just be a wife. I think maybe I would have liked something such as more examples of women that had to give up on their passions, kind of like how we saw the courtesan who tried to go after love and became impoverished.

Ironically for its theme, I don't think there was much about the art the series was actually impressive, most passing in the sense that it did not have any problems that took me out of things, but nothing that really jumped out at me. Did not really notice anything about the music either, but perhaps that is a little bit of a positive. In terms of mood or atmosphere I am not going to compare this to something like Spice and Wolf, which might at first seem not worth comparing, I think maybe worth a little for its mostly grounded historical settings, so I think could have benefited from something like the music and sound benefiting from something more immersive. But that would probably be asking a lot.

My rating is Decent (6/10), I think fair to say that it is a rather decent series without too much to actively complain about, but not really anything you would point to and say is impressive. Not that I am talking down to something for being across the board decent like this, in general I would say that it is consistent, and I think that should also be worth points.
