All this trailer showed was the flash-backs we've seen, many many times. What's this supposed to be about.?

Well, this OVA is an animated telling of the burial arc of the manga...which is more or less the whole backstory of the...story. If you've read the manga, it's nothing new. If all you've seen is the anime, this will be somewhat different. No, they are not west yet. No, this isn't a continuation of what's gone on in the anime. I'm not even sure how they COULD continue the plotline in the anime considering, uhh, the second half of the Gunlock anime kind of screwed the plot up a little bit, completely diverging from what happens in the manga to a point where I'm not sure they could get it back on track without one hell of a lot of wrangling and excuses.

The "problem" with making anime out of Saiyuki is that every time they've done it, it's outpaced the manga, which has been sidetracked and derailed numerous times for a variety of reasons. The anime is probably 90% filler. The more interesting, cohesive parts are all taken from the manga. Ever wonder why the second half of the first series doesn't get them west or have any kind of really satisfying ending? Because they're not there yet in the manga...and because the whole Homura arc was just kind of fabricated out of nowhere to give them a second season.

Animating a single, finished arc like burial as an OVA is probably pretty smart, since it looks like it's going to be a faithful retelling (if the character designs are any indication) of the manga. I liked burial, so I am excited.

That is probably the ONE thing that irritates me about Saiyuki is that they haven't gotten far enough West to kick Gyoukoumen Koushou's demon patootie. Or at least sit back and appalude while Kougoji-sama does it. Twisted Evil

I know the Reload manga is almost over, so unless the plot is tied up with blinding speed, I think that I'm going to be going... Question

I dunno about the RELOAD manga being almost over. The Gaiden one almost is, I think.

I'm not sure how close Minekura is wanting her Saiyuki to mirror "the Journey West" but the original one took 14 years. We're barely over a year into this one...

Sweet!

Well, the other poster already explained most. This is I believe going to be a three OVA series. It focuses on Burial Arc which is the past of all of the guys. I don't think these chapters were ever animated, but I could be wrong since I did not ever see the anime series in their entirety.

I personally have been anticipating this, because it's a good arc. The art looks nice at least compared to the other series (especially that one cap of Sanzo as a child, but those light scenes usually look good). Here's to it having better back ground music as opposed to previous series.

Ha at the end they teased with showing Ukoku dressed as Sanzo.

Nope, these chapters were never actually animated. Like people have pointed out, we know a little of these happenings from flashbacks, but it's not actually the same thing as just the flashbacks and serves to fill in the holes in the story.

Gunlock sort of skipped burial and went straight to introducing Hazel, though they didn't quite pick up the "even a worm" arc...I'm assuming this is because he's more of a clear badguy in their version and they wanted more action or something. Who knows why they do what they do.

I don't think Geneon does as good a job on the dub as ADV, either, but the subbed version is excellent, anyway. I watched the whole first series with people who don't like to read and got used to the ADV cast. No big deal, though, I just watch the show subbed now.

If you're not reading the manga, though, you really should. It's far superior to and more focused than the anime. Also, the art starts getting really good. YONZO's character designs for this burial OVA look a LOT like the guys do in the pages of the manga, which is exciting. This is how they should look animated. Fifth time's a charm, I guess?

Oh yay, I love the flashbacks and backstories of Saiyuki. The Burial Arc was interesting 'cause it's before the travels but not 500 years ago. It's nice to see that part of the story filled it Anime smile

Seeing how the following seasons kinda lost its way from the manga plot was a letdown, but I must say that I enjoyed the Homura arc. Actually, me and my sis like to claim that it's the best filler arc ever. Anime smile And I think I heard that the manga-ka had involvement with creating that arc.

I think because it based it's story around Gaiden - it was great to see some of the Gaiden story animated. And also it almost had this fanfic feel - we would actually make fun of Homura in the flashbacks 'cause he barely had any interactions with the "cool" group in the real story . Haha.

The ADV dub was so fun. I watched the entire thing sub the first time through, but I kept flipping to the dub to see how they executed certain lines and scenes 'cause I thought the dub was great. I loved some of the dub casting choices, and a lot of the dialogue and delivery were hilarious. Anime smile Yah, too bad that ADV let this license go.

I had no idea that the Homura arc was just a filler, I actually found myself enjoying the second arc more than the first one and thought that Homura was an interesting character. I liked though he went through so much and had lost a loved one he didn't act like an emo, unlike most of the villains out there who had gone through a similar shit.

Homura = Filler! Holy Cow!

Until you mentioned it CaliSerenity, I never realized/noticed. Confused

And I like Homura as well. He wasn't your typical bad guy. In fact, if you were to ask me to name 20 Anime Bad Guys, he wouldn't even come in the top 30. He's another one of those that you do understand where he's coming from and why he's doing what he's doing.

So the Homura arc was filler. Well, hell! No wonder the guys didn't arrive in the West!

It would be kind of silly to get them to their end goal before the manga did. If the manga's popularity suddenly shot up for whatever reason, and the anime had already come to a definite end....well, whoever made that decision to end the anime would probably get fired.

Arguably, aside from people like Princess Hosebeast, the bad guys in Saiyuki don't have any less noble intentions than the protagonists do. Let's see.

Kougaiji's motivation? Get the sutras so I can maybe save my mother.

Sanzo's motivation? Get the sutras so I can avenge the death of my successor.

Sanzo also has no problem killing people to get what he wants...even innocent people who are basically just brainwashed or driven to madness through no fault of their own...whereas Kougaiji seems to have some sort of tortured compassion for the fact that his people have all gone crazy.

Once you take into account that none of Sanzo's entourage are saints, exactly, either, it makes you wonder how these guys wound up as the heroes of this show, since it's really Kougaiji's group that has the more altruistic intentions.

I love Sanzo, but he is kind of a crazy bastard. In any other show or manga, he seriously COULD be the bad guy. You do see flashes of his cruel streak from time to time.

I doubt it was a matter of them just letting it go, since there is a lot of money to be made on the series. I know that Geneon was a sponsor of RELOAD and Gunlock as they aired on Japanese TV, so I bet this is why ADV couldn't pick up anything past Requiem.

Homura & co were designed to mirror Sanzo's crew
Kazuya Minekura did the dvd jackets. Considering the gods were based on Sanzo's party (& sort of similar to the Kami arc of the manga, maybe because the artist hadn't finished, the animators went with a similar concept) She might have even done the character designs-they are included in the Salty Dog artbooks.

I thought we see Ukoku in his Sanzo robes in Burial...somewhere we see him in Sanzo robes.

Geneon snatched up Saiyuki. Listen to the Requiem commentary-ADV was furious at losing Saiyuki. Greg Ayres said he'd buy it because he loves the title, but he'd just watch it subbed for the Japanese cast. But they were losing Sanzo, anyway--ADV had to fly Matranga in from New York where he'd just moved to. Say what you will-Bang Zoom took more care to match the Japanese voices & even the name pronunciations.
