Kanye is just another normie who saw dbz and a couple of anime on VHS when he was 5 and thinks he's an anime fan. he's a fan of a couple of anime, not an anime fan. An anime fan watches anime regularly the way mainstream society watches live action tv shows and movies on cable and direct tv. I see alot of celebs talking about Akira and ghost in the shell but never banana fish, the upcoming vinland saga adaptation, or whatevers current. James Cameron probably saw battle angel alita at some film festival in the 80's and never delved any deeper into the world of anime. Now here we are with a piece of crapclive action series when he could have funded a, well you know, a new anime adaptation. If he really cared about anime, he would have done that. Ok, I'm done ranting.

Totally agree but still waiting for american live-action version of One Piece because of Nami's boobs.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but after watching Akira a couple of times over the years it dawned upon me that it's a mess of an adaptation of a great manga but that's justified given the manga was being written alongside the movie! Perhaps somewhere down the line they can do the source material justice but without the context, people like Kanye assume this stuff not knowing that at all. It's sad to be so ignorant of this fact and his wife isn't much better herself as she probably never saw an episode of Franxx at all during its run (don't blame her for not doing so as it was horrible). I really don't like how homogenized that anime has become and that's why it isn't as great as it used to be these days. I'll always be a fan but it's people like these that remind me of such.

Nothing current? According to his Twitter, he loves Darling in the Franxx too. Lol there's no reason to police people on what amount of anime qualifies them to be an "anime fan".

I strongly disagree. I think anime is better than ever now.
You guys are kind of acting like "This is our playground and you can't play here!" with this sort of attitude.....this is the thing that makes people "outside" of our community angry.

I'd rather someone famous like any anime, than non at all or worse criticize anime fans (assuming they all live in their parents basement : P)
that said I dont really like kanye west at all...his music or his points of view on politics...both give me headaches.

Kanye West also thinks Donald Trump isn't a racist, so I wouldn't put much stock in what he has to say about anime.

I've never heard of anyone ELSE who still liked Akira.
(When Crunchyroll added it to their catalogue a year or two ago, a new clean-slate generation got to look at it fresh on reputation, and when the inevitable "What's the big deal?" discussion came up from the new fans, the older fans had to come clean and admit...we didn't really know nowadays, either.
It was just a Big Thing At the Time, and kept along on life support for the last thirty years by the same "traditionalist" fans who keep repeating their first titles, and insisting that new fans watch Eva, Grave of the Fireflies and Record of Lodoss Wars.)

I'll say I like to watch anime myself but I can't watch it all everyday due to having a severe case of having a life. Even when DBZ,Gundam, & Pokemon used to come on every weekday and or Saturday I didn't always catch an episode for whatever reason.

I really DO think all new fans should watch Eva though.... It's like "HEY KIDS! You like moody teenagers in big-ass robots, yeah? Yeah, do you want to know WHY so many anime use this trope....WELL THEN...."

It's a generational thing, like how older music fans say the Beatles are the "greatest band of all time" or how cinephiles herald Citizen Kane as the greatest film ever made. They gain that status for what they did for their particular fields. Akira was the same for anime (especially in the west until DBZ came out and started the process again for GenY/Millenials).
Newer fans wouldn't get it because they are pretty much reaping the benefits of a lot of the things Akira brought to the table as far as directing and storytelling go. Kanye is an old head, so of course he and others like him who were growing up in that era would herald Akira as the best (not saying he's wrong for thinking that of course, but that's how it is).
