I had a friend ask me after veiwing Afro Samurai if there was any other series that stars black people. The only other series I could think of was Tenjho Tenge with the character Bob, but he wasn't the main character.

well red Garden has a large number of black people just wandering around, pretty much any scene of a high street, in a lunch hall, or anything like that will have at least a few random black people in it. I think that is probably better than making Black people the 'main characters' because there is no reason for them to have extra attention(and no real reason why they shouldn't be though), do you lot ever stop and look twice when you see a black person? Over here it's taken as a given that there will be people from all manner of places and races and the like so much so that in general it's ignored what you look like. By portraying black people in normal roles doing normal things just like most people will see a black person is, if anything, better than making them some kind of attention grabbing device.

I can think of little throwaways here and there. I mostly see them in a foreign or American force that is invading/defending Japan.

There's a bunch of them in Cowboy Bebop, including Abdul Hakim and a hilarious blaxploitation parody episode.

They make an appearance in GTO spoiler[right at the end, as gangstas].

There's the one Soul Society captain in Bleach, though he's not that interesting.

Argentosoma probably has the most significant characters that are black. One is a military commander and one a cadet. Unlike Bebop, their characters do not depend on stereotypes or parodies, and both are part of the main cast of characters. The commander figures heavily into the plot spoiler[he actually commands the team responsible for fighting the aliens, who are also most of the main characters]. The cadet was left with such a minor role that they created a bonus OAV episode just for her.

Would that be the Mushroom Hunting episode? Quite a trip...that one is..
Off the top of my head, two notable dark-skinned ladies in anime are Feb in Sol Bianca (easily my fave space babe) and Nadia (of the secret of blue water etc).

Anthy from Revolutionary Girl Utena and her brother.

Sailor Pluto from Sailor Moon was supposed to be black but I don't think you could tell in the series. I think she is the most elegant of the Sailor Scouts.

Pirotess from Record of Lodoss Wars was also black. Evil elf chick Smile

Shayla Shayla from El Hazard and maybe the Bugrom Queen. (I actually like Afura Mann from that series though... yay wind!

Urd from Ah Megamisama is a pretty significant character too. Smile She has the most beautiful and unique angel IMHO. Anime hyper

Hey does Mr Popo from Dragon Ball count as black? He's awesome and ultra black Smile

Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist was black too right?

I'm sure there are more out there... as for a main character, I'm not too sure...

I haven't double checked for you but I'm pretty sure Hunter X Hunter has a couple in the background, no major roles though. Also Wolf's Rain has a very tanned individual who could be considered as black Confused but I don't think he's supposed to be. Yeah Cowboy Bebop episode 17 is the Mushroom Hunting ep, but there's a few black people starring throughout the series.

Man, I totally forgot about Mr. Popo. He was Shocked Super Black! Shocked I don't think there was anyone blacker than Mr. Popo. He was pretty cool too.

I don't see the point in simply listing all the black characters you know of in anime. If you want to discuss why there aren't many of them, then try reviving this thread.
