The Lexicon located on the left side of the screen under Encyclopedia and within the definition page for OST wrote: | Incidental Music (IM), also called "insert songs" or "featured songs", are songs or musical pieces that occur within the body of the anime. They differ from Background Music (BGM) in the amount of "attention" they are given - for instance, there is seldom any dialogue over IM, whereas dialogue frequently occurs over BGM. |
Basically, it's a song that is "inserted" into the series for whatever purpose. The lyrics usually carry some kind of meaning, I suppose. A prime example is .hack//SIGN or BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad. Just listen to the background and you'll hear all of sorts of songs that are not the intro. or ending.

Yes. The technicial definiton of a song is a piece of music that contains lyrics. You "sing" a "song." Otherwise, it's just background music.

OK, I see. So bassically normal BGM/Theme Music is just BGM, if it's got Words, then it's an Insert? So am I safe to assume that even if a song is just not "inserted" into one spot, but rather it plays often, as long as it has Vocals, it's an Insert?

Right. Because normally, an anime will have at least an Opening and Ending Song (though not all of them do). The reason they're called Insert Songs is because they're literally inserted somewhere throughout the series. It can be a lot or a little.
But by own definition, I've always thought of songs as having words anyway. If it was just music with no words, then I'd call it "a piece of music."
I made a thread discussing the definition of a "song" way back because a lot of people seem to misinterpret what a song really is.
Any music major can and will tell you the difference (at least they should).

Sorry but this is a necropost (of mega proportions I might add) which we don't allow. Plus we also don't allow list posts either which proceeded the necropost. Locking.
