Cartoon Network Pakistan..........

Who would have ever thought those two things would ever go together.

Recently there have been more mainstream anime with Space Dandy and Attack on Titan.

Mainstream?? Both these shows air late at night and are aimed at otaku...

Rise of more mainstream anime should cite Youkai Watch, Abarenbou Rikishi!! Matsutarou, and other kiddy shows, but those are nothing new either we always get those so I do not see how it is any different.

QFT.

Concerning the business about reviews, no response to a review irritates me more than an implicit or explicit accusation that something has gotten a favorable review because accepting a review copy has made me a shill for the company in question. Any site with integrity (and that certainly includes ANN) wouldn't tolerate that.

Besides, most companies that do/have sent out screeeners fully understand and appreciate that reviews based on screeners are cheap advertising. Whether the review is favorable or not, it at least helps get the title's name out there, and it's not like everyone heeds critics' opinions anyway. Occasionally a company will get prickly about a series of bad reviews and cut off the flow of screeners, but that's usually not a permanent situation.

And yeah, getting the crap mixed in with the gems is definitely something you just have to put up with when getting unsolicited screeners. (That was especially true back at the peak of the manga boom, when even I would get random volumes of manga stuffed in with screener shipments.) But on occasion that's exposed me to a title that I never would have otherwise considered but ended up liking quite a bit, so it's all good.

Agreed, for me a good example are titty shows, since they are always put down I tend to ignore most complains, and ann reviews have the delicacy to point out how good the bps is, so ther reviews help a lot. not to mention the very few titty shows that do get good reviews (like gantz, seikon no qwaser, highschool dxd) so that means they are pretty much a must watch for a genre fan.

honesty is good, I would rather listen to the honest opinion of a person I don't agree with , because i know where I stand on I know what am I going to disagree with, than listening to someone who conveniently changeshis/her opinion; i also can't really imagine someone is getting biased/bribed by beign gifted a cheap dvd.

His classification of mainstream is likely anything that appeals to the toonami/adult swim crowd which is as misinformed and ignorant as his definition of moe.

It's a practice that makes more sense when it comes to video games. The idea is that if you routinely give companies bad reviews, they stop sending you review copies, which means other sites get advanced copies and put their reviews up a week in advanced and is generating all those page views and ad revenue, you're stuck waiting until it actually comes to review it and by then no one cares what you have to say and your page views will be much lower. Not sure how much of that can actually apply to anime though, since it's a much smaller industry.

On the Era of Moe question, first of all how can the era of moe be over? It just got it's own gTLD! In all seriousness, this is one of those things that arise from bad terminology – moe is an emotion, not a genre or style or fetish. Inferring from the question I can assume Mr. James means 'moeblob'. Now, for a brief theory of the anime cycle. Anime styles and fetishes tend to follow this general pattern:
1)The element is introduced
2)The element grows in popularity because it is new and fresh
3)The element snowballs until becomes a major subgenre
4) We hit 'peak element' with a show that comes along and basically perfects the element
5) All shows that follow after seem weak in comparison to the previous perfection
6) The element dwindles but straggles on for several more years.
A good example is the maid fetish—round the turn of the millennial you couldn't throw a brick without hitting a maid outfit, and every season had at least one show staring maids. Now of days they only show up sparsely, and never have their own dedicated show. I think we hit 'peak moeblob' with K-On, and the genre has been dying off since, but it will probly stick around for another half decade or so. Besides, by that time we will have already moved on to bigger and better fetishes.

...Srlys thinking about buying me on of those .moe addresses...

in my opinion, it does feel like we're about to enter a new era for anime, that we're finally fully recovering from the crash of the late 2000's/early 2010s

Hey, Yuna Returns is an early directorial effort by Akiyuki Shinbo and shows it. [although not as much as yamamoto yohko ep 9.]

Certainly it's a vast improvement on the original.

Ehhh. The first OVA does well in not taking itself too seriously (the first episode is very Looney Tunes) and is pleasantly short so as to not outlive its welcome. Shinbo storyboarded that super fun first episode, as I recall, so good on him for that. Returns tries to lay on the dark and emotional heart string pulling in a quick and cheap way - it goes straight for the cool dark visuals to do so, but doesn't really earn it in the writing department, so it falls flat.

The fact that this ends with spoiler[all the characters who died dramatically but oops lol just kidding didn't really die getting together to SING ABOUT LOVE or friendship or whatever] caps it all off as a rather embarrassing production.

I'll admit, I haven't been crazy about a lot of other Shinbo's work anyway (though I did enjoy Madoka and Zetsubou Sensei, of course), but even then I think it's among the weakest things he's been involved with.

Many moons ago, I used to review videos for a print magazine. Screeners came to me, but by way of my editor; not directly from the companies, and I had to send them back when I was done. So in some cases, there aren't any freebies anyway. Thank goodness Smile

Then, a few years later, when I called my mom to tell her I got the job at Central Park Media, she said, "That's great, honey! ...Wait a second, isn't that the company that used to send you all that really terrible porn?"

Seriously!? Laughing OMG. That was the funniest thing I've read all day, Justin! *dies laughing* Especially since I'm now wondering if your mom ever watched some of those screeners or just happened through the room - a lot - while you were viewing to review. Oh my...

When we used to review, it's digital files, so there's really no advantage. Laughing
(Save maybe getting to watch 'em before they go on TV.)
