I bought the Fullmetal Alchemist movie today at Best Buy, due to the promotional sticker mentioning the Best Buy exclusive disc. I have read that Borders has an exclusive version which includes a lenticular insert, or something to that effect.

A) Has anyone seen or bought this Borders/Walden Books version?

B) Was anyone aware of these store exclusive versions prior to release. (I found nothing on the official movie site mentioning them.)

C) Are there any other versions?

Considering the fact that there is now the possibility of something similar happening for the Special Edition being released Novemebr 14th, I'm mildly irritated.

The likeliness of FUNimation forwarning people seems slim to me. Unless of course the plans for exclusive versions were made apparent in some way prior to the release of the standard version. I lucked out and stumbled upon it at Best Buy. I won't get into my views on chain store(s) exclusive, but for avid fans, I can't imagine the disappointment of finding this out after the fact. And given that many of the people eager to buy this movie ARE avid fans, it seems like a pretty rotten thing for those who preorder or buy online to experience.

A 30 minute documentary may seem like something trite to fuss over. I'd agree with that if this particular purchase didn't involve over 20 hours of time-invested storyline leading up to the release. And for some, several hundreds of dollars.

I understand FUNimations obvious right to do this, or the obvious opportunity to sell more copies. But I think they could have drawn the line at a delayed special edition.

Furthermore, this isn't an Usher cd. While Fullmetal Alchemist is a bit of a phenomenon in terms of popularity, it is still niche, so multiple retailer exclusive versions of the same movie seems real underhanded.

I applaud what they're doing with their Special Editions (Basilisk, Speed Grapher, Trinity Blood.) But I am certain that more than a few people don't look at such a marketing ploy with this movie as a commitment to anime fans, but rather the opposite.

And if this Best Buy exclusive disc ends up bonus content on the actual Special Edition, it will be the lamest thing I've seen an anime company do, next to ADV's fast action thinpack debacle. Then again, something similar happened with Inuyasha movies, didn't it? Maybe being on [adult swim] warrants all of these "purchase options."

I'll stop.

But anyone that wants a Best Buy receipt to return their non-exclusive version for a new one...

(I can't wait until someone tells me there was a heads up on all of this.)

Hi there.
"[Lance] Heiskell also announced that the Fullmetal Alchemist movie will be available with a special limited edition lenticular cover at Waldenbooks, with a special 30-minute documentary included only in the Best Buy edition."

Yes, I saw it when shopping yesterday. it looks just like the standard cover, except the characters are floaty lenticular images.

Wal-Mart had the movie bundled with Vol. 1 of the series.

The fun part is, that same bonus disc's content is also included in Vol. 13.

I'm going to chalk that up to production delays unless someone else can prove malice aforethought on FUNimation's part.

Is that what's on the Best Buy disc? Yeesh, how crappy- it's not even a good "documentary".

(At least now I know for sure I'm not missing anything but floaty character art. For now.)

Keep in mind that is not an uncommon practice either. Tons of different studios release a special edition at a later date. There was yet another Lord of the Rings and Star Wars a couple of weeks ago. True it makes it hard for the die hard fan, they don't want to wait until the special edition comes out months later, they want it now (I know I am like that) but the reality is, it happens.
It doesn't happen often for Anime titles but it does occur a lot in the Home Video business for major movies.

We also don't know the reason for the delay either..Maybe there's some content that needed extra time to get approved from Japan to use or something who knows..

I honestly don't think Funimation is out to get the fans. Of all the studios for Anime I still think they listen best to what fans want. That's just my experience anyway..
