Just finished the second episode and I'll have to say, they did keep up the excellent that I gave it earlier, and it's pushin towards a 10/10. In the preview for the next ep though, you'll notice something that's changed from the first series, it has a little something to do with who's holding the thing known as devil's tongue or w/e it is (you know, the stuff you scare people with), but that's all that I noticed. And yes, they bring back Saito's famous narration as well as spoiler[the class rep asking why he's narrating to himself] and more comedy. As it has turned out so far, I'd say this is going to end as a Masterpiece, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Uguu~~, cuteness overload on episode 2! Anime hyper

http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/2891/ayukawaiimw5.gif

And yes, if you're sharp there were subtle Haruhi Suzumiya references during the time Yuuichi was in the school. Heck, there were quite of bit of funny moments from beginning to end like spoiler[the jam of DOOM, Yuuichi getting lost, and Ayu crashing head on TWICE. And then there's Makoto's dramatic entrance (no hiding in the box, I'm afraid.] There were also some sly foreshadowing here and there, but I'm not going to mention them. Very Happy

I don't feel like typing in paragraphs, so I won't.

Episode 2 random thoughts:

The OP sequence is reallly, really, awesome. Words cannot describe its awesomeness. Actually, it can, but that's beside the point...

The jam scene was hilarious! I don't recall whether Akiko was really a bad cook or not (I remember that she wasn't), but poor Yuuichi!

The background music playing at the 6:20 mark (or around there) reminds me of I've (which in turn reminds me of Air, and I am really fond of the Air soundtrack). The scene it is being played in is definitely my favorite scene in the whole episode, mostly because of the background music, but also because I like seeing Yuuichi alone with Nayuki outside.

The blonde guy is funny! He was semi-funny in the original and game, but spoiler[his desperation for Kaori makes him really entertaining to watch.]

Is it just me, or does Kouda Mariko come dangerously close to sounding like Gotou Yuuko at times?

Kaori is so much more interesting than before! Her personality can be summed up by Yuuichi's priceless line at around the 14:10 mark: "Misaka Kaori...ka? Kuuru na onna dana..." (Misaka Kaori...huh? She's one cool lady..."

Thank you, KyoAni, for preserving and dramatizing even more one particular hilarious scene with Ayu and Yuiichi at around the 14:30 mark. spoiler[Who would've thought that Ayu would be left-handed!?].

Couldn't agree more. And props to Yui for voicing Ayu to be an even more moe character than before!

I never really liked Shiori, and I...still don't.

spoiler[Makoto's entrance was really cool, but as expected, after that...]

The "animating a game" feel seems to have completely disappeared this episode. Everything is smooth and works out fine. I'm getting somewhat used to the voices, although I feel that Kouda is slightly inconsistent with Nayuki's voice at times. Overall, a vast improvement from the first episode in my opinion, and props to KyoAni for, well, making this episode really good.

I haven't seen the first Kanon or played the game so I'm not catching some of the things that I've seen mentioned here, but I can say that I am more than just enjoying KyoAni's Kanon at the moment. The animation quality is very nice(though in my opinion that's to be expected from Kyoto Animation), and the character designs, though fairly generic, are unique enough to be recognizable. The story is fairly confusing for me right now but I assume that that's how it should be since Yuuichi is still trying to recover his lost memories of the city and the people he's running into. Because this is my first time with Kanon I'm not sure what to expect from this series, I've seen it talked about as a harem but I've also seen talked about as more of a drama so I have no real idea. So far I absolutely love Ayu but the character they introduced at the end of episode 2 is definetely interesting.

The reason I'm posting is because some mentioned earlier in this thread that the series tends to be catering to returning fans. Wether that's true or not, I'm still enjoying the series immensely so far and I haven't seen a thing on it till now. I also tend to like when a studio will cater to returning fans, it makes them feel appreciated and keeps them watching because they're not going through the same stuff they've seen before.

I was kind of bored with the first episode, but the second episode started off funny and it stayed that way. I really like the fact that Yuuichi is extremely similar to Kyon, his personality made it a lot easier for me to sit through harem. Hopefully, the high quality stays this way, and the story picks up. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

More awesome fun in Kanon episode 3! Specifically the antics between Yuuichi and the new girl Makoto he picked up were really hilarious. Like for example, spoiler[Makoto's reaction of Yuuichi dropping a piece of konnyaku down her shirt. I didn't expect her to be THIS feisty and energetic, and KyoAni were able to animate her really well.] The "token sick girl" Shiori gets introduced as well, and I have to say her entrance was pretty cool (excuse the pun). Cool

Ayu glomps Yuuichi again with more "Uguu-ness" though spoiler[she did mention she was looking for something. Also she mentioned there "used" be a cake store there and has no idea what a cell phone is........]

Episode ends with spoiler[Mai in the school hallway carrying a sword and slashing something. What could it be?!!! Surprised]

Hopefully next episode we'll see spoiler[more badassness of Mai because her story is awesome! Cool ] And I have to say, the falling snow scenes had me FREEZING! Embarassed

Ahhh, episode 4. Well the one thing you could complain about is spoiler[there's ANOTHER cliffhanger that ends with Mai. Mad

But there's no doubt she'll get more screentime next episode. Razz ]

Other then that, spoiler[the episode began with a continuation of a flashback of where Yuuichi and Ayu first met when they were kids. They were SO ADORABLE especially Ayu! Anime hyper

Anyone noticed how that parallels with that very scene in the first episode? Keep that in mind!

Other stuff happened like Makoto's failed revenge plot against Yuuichi, Ayu meeting up with Akiko (do notice the subtle reaction Akiko made), and Ayu and Makoto finally meeting each other. It's been awhile since I've seen the old version though I almost forgot why Kaori didn't want to go home.]

Hope you have sharp eyes because some of these scenes will be important later on! Wink

Hahaha, episode 5 was comedy gold especially the ones between Yuuichi and Makoto. spoiler[The bathroom scene was hilarious a well as Yuuichi telling Makoto to go buy a porn magazine. Heck, did anyone noticed how devious and evil Yuuichi was towards Makoto? Twisted Evil

I also liked how Ayu was nonchalantly eating breakfast with Yuuichi, and he didn't care until he finally realized she was there. Then there's Nayuki's randomly sleeping where ever she is. And man, Mai was certainly hard to talk to so Yuuichi has to get creative with the questions. And Shiori + short skirt and thigh-high stockings = total hotness!!! Cool ]

And that's it, all of the main girls have been properly introduced. Now comes the fun part...... Surprised

Well I had episode 2, 3, 4, and 5 downloaded but didn't get around to watching them til today...but since discussion has moved quickly to episode five I'll just comment on that.

spoiler[I thought that the bath tub see was funny and I was surprised about what he said "if you want I'll join you" Laughing that sounded similar to something I would say. I also found the porno mag part to be really funny...I can only imagine what someone would say to a little girl lookin for that kind of stuff. Twisted Evil ]

Question: Is Yuuichi really like this in the Toei version, or the game? You know a semi-malevolent sarcastic smartass type of guy (which btw is awesome). I was also wondering that about Yukito when I was watching AIR. Both are quite similar.

Ah, and yes episode 5 was the best.

Yes. IIRC, he makes even more snarky comments in the game, including one hilarious scene when he pokes fun at Nayuki's track team by comparing them to slugs and snails.

In visual novels such as Kanon, all of the main characters are generally voiced except for the main character, Yuuichi in Kanon's case. The original PC version did not even have voices, but the Dreamcast version released quite a bit later included full voice acting. All the game's voices for Kanon have been kept for the KyoAni 2006 remake, but they have freedom with Yuuichi's voice (as he is not voiced in the game), and they picked Tomokazu Sugita to voice our semi-malevolent sarcastic protagonist, and Sugita is doing a fine job.

Ah, and yes episode 5 was the best.
I'll reconfirm that he is like that in Kanon '02, though they've stepped things up a bit for Kanon '06.

Oddly enough, the main character in "Hourglass of Summer" (Natsuiro no sunadokei) is voiced, which really enhanced things in that game. On the other hand, the main character in "Amusement Park" (which is the only other such game I've played) is not voiced, which made it even harder to stay awake ~since the game isn't that great.

I've really liked some of the comedy in these past few episodes--seing Makoto's antics again makes me remember why I liked Kanon so much. Always teetering between cutesy/helpless and violent, there's never a dull moment with her. Speaking of Sugita's acting, my favorite simple line out of him is the "Naze??" when Makoto hits him in episode 3, after he comes up with the brilliant name of 殺村凶子 (Satsumura Kyouko) And, for those familiar with the Kanon storyline, episode 5 provided some certain hints about Makoto.

Also in #5, I was really expecting a repeat of a certain incident that was in episode 4 of Kanon '02, where spoiler[Makoto comes into Yuuichi's room and tries to scare him, but we see the brief image of a blue monster outline] I tell you, that seriously freaked me (and a lot of other people) out, especially since Kanon '02 was my "relaxing anime before bed" when I watched it last fall. But this time around, I was bracing myself for a shock that never came.

It seems they've slowed the pacing a little bit--now that all the girls are introduced, we're seeing a little more time spent with each one, and episode 6 or 7 looks to have spoiler[the demons that Mai is hunting.] *expects good quality from KyoAni*

I was surprised with Mia...I thought she would just be some sort of silent kind of badass character but during the lunch Yuuichi shared with her and Sayuri she came off as extremely adorable to me. I didn't think I'd really like Mai all that much with what little they had showed of her up until episode 5 but I can't help but like her after seeing how cute she really can be. I'm looking forward to where KyoAni takes it from here.

Watched episode 5.

This one made me laugh pretty hard, especially when spoiler[Yuichi told Makoto to buy a porn magazine.] Anime hyper That was just priceless. I'm also enjoying the Makoto/Yuichi encounters that've been happening recently. Funny stuff, IMO.

Seeing as he voiced Kyon in MoHS (who also makes similar comments), I'm not too surprised. Razz Rolling Eyes

Bwahaha!!! Episode 6.....man, that Yuuichi! Laughing

spoiler[Pretty much Yuuichi and Ayu went out together to the movies. And Ayu didn't expect it to be horror flick which she got scared to the extreme. And there's Yuuichi who didn't give a damn! Laughing Laughing

Although I have to say, those gruesome sounds of the movie were indeed freaky to listen to. Makes me wonder when KyoAni will attempt to animate a horror genre (like say Higurashi no Naku Koro ni). Wink

Other stuff happened like Makoto trying to get a job but failed and Nayuki being ridiculously sleepy all the time. Though the miso soup in the tub at the end of the episode was pretty damn funny.]

Looks like next episode, they're going forward with Makoto's storyline.
