I asked Answerman this question a few weeks ago but I have gotten tired of waiting for the answer, so I figured I'd ask my fellow manga enthusiasts. How do they decide how many chapters each volume of manga aseries will have? for example weekly series generally have more then monthly series because the chapters come out more often and there tend to be more of them in a series. Also if a series is more popular do you put more chapters in a volume and give the fans what they want, or do you put less in and milk it for all it's worth?

A standard volume's length is around and about 200 pages. Weekly magazines usually have 15-20 pages every issue, so thats how they decide how many chapters end up in a volume.
Whereas with monthly manga its usually more pages, since a chapter only gets released every month. For example Fullmetal Alchemist which has about 40-ish pages per chapter. And a volume ends up having 4 chapters.
So the amount of chapters in a volume depends on the standard chapter-length of a manga.

Yeah, it really depends on how long the chapters are. The most chapters I've ever seen in one volume of manga is Chobits, where they have upwards of 10. The shortest I've ever seen was NANA, where it's 2. Generally speaking I'd say 4-6 would probably be the norm, though that could be more from my own experience.

What about Saint Seiya? I only have the first five volumes, but even though it is a weekly manga it has only about 4 or 5 chapters per volume.

After reading Ichi the Killer, I noticed that those volumes didn't have any chapter breaks.

One Piece will have 10 chaps per volume. On occasion they'll have 11 though.

Yeah, a fair amount of them don't have chapter breaks, so it can sometimes be hard to figure out where they would have been.

Some of Watase Yu's do not have chapter breaks in the graphic novels. I guess that you would have to look for something of a "cliffhanger" to kind of guess where it may have ended in the serial magazine. I think it's usually when the page consists of just one or two panels (either top and bottom or left and right).

For me, I don't think that chapter breaks really matter, if you have to put the book down for whatever reason, you stick a marker in it and go back to it later.

Like I said, usually. Not every single time, it just depends greatly per series.

The chapter counts are irrevelant. It's up to the publisher to see how many chapters they will collect into a volume. Preferally around 180-220 pages for a standard Graphic novel.

I also belive some artist don't release chapter but do straight graphic novel.
