I'm referring to the banner that states, "Dear Canadians,
Remember what happenned when Americans like you failed to vote? On January 23rd VOTE!!!" It doesn't bother me at all (except "Americans like you" caught me off guard; when I re-read the sentence it made sense but at first it seemed as if that statement was addressed to Americans), but I wondered why it's here. Not that I don't support voting (every Canadian should click the link), but is there a special reason in particular or is it a mere whim? Anyway, it's funny.

My apologies if this has already been asked; I read through the "Technical Questions" forum and didn't see anything related to this ad in particular.

Same here. I like voting more then the next man, but WTF "Americans like you." Is Canada that over ran with Americans? I figured they open a hunting season to thin out the herd. Razz

Is Canada not a part of North America? There is some poor spelling in that ad, though.

I believe it refers to liberals / democrats. Because of the demographics that they belong to, liberals and democrats are less likely to vote than concervatives / republicans.

It isn't because they're liberals, just that there's a cross over in the demographics (Students for example).

The suggestions is that, had voter turn out among thsoe demographics been the same as other demographics, the results of the election would have been different. And that the same is about to happen in Canada, with the liberal party and the New (neo) Concervative party very close in the polls.

Yeah, but Canadian's aren't "Americans," nor are Mexicans or anyone else who lives in the Americas.

Americans are people from the United States of America.

That doesn't make much sense Tempest. Europeans do not exist then? What about Asians? I think what you're talking about is just a short for "Citizen of the United states of America", hence "American". However, American should also apply towards all people living in America, not just the ones living in the United States.

No idea how much worth the next link has, but it seems to agree with me. http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=american

I don't know how other people think about it in Europe or Asia, but when I hear "American" or "America", I think of the continent, not the country. The US is just a small part of America afterall, it doesn't represent an entire continent.

Oh, I agree it's stupid.

But that's the way the word is used.

Not like I, or you, or all the logic in the world, can change it.

"America" no longer refers to the "Americas" it is short for the United States of America. And Americans are citizens of the United States of America.

Worth pointing out that the FTAA is the "Free Trade Agreement of the Americas" even in official documents, they're avoiding using the term "America" to refer to countries other than the USA.

am i the only one bothered that im looking at whats basically a political view on the top of an entertainment site, i dont come here for politics, nor do i see it necessary for it to be displayed as a banner ad, the poll is one thing, holding one political view on the top of the main page bothers me though

Any other Americans a little offended by the implications made in the banner?

"Dear Canadians,
Remember what happened when Americans like you failed to vote?"

I'm proud to have voted the way I did, and happy with the outcome; I'm not happy being insulted for my political beliefs on an anime news site.

Although there is a hint of bias in that ad, it's mostly just a call to get people to vote.

The ad doesn't say "Vote Liberal", "Vote Conservative", "Vote NDP" or "Vive Le Québec Libre!"

And the link is to the Elections Canada website, not to a particular political party.

I like God of Chaos above me am also bothered by this whole thing. Now as a viewer of ANN', I fully enjoy alot of the content found here, however I find the poll question (and subsequently the banner ad) absurd, and unneccessary for an anime website.

Now, while I am capable of dealing with a political poll that is geared towards finding out a persons voting preference (why it's needed, or valued, I couldn't guess) but the banner, I find almost insulting.

I am not about to justify the American presidents actions, but, this isn't even about him. Your banner has successfully taken a pot shot at Americans who voted, regardless of who they voted for and why, and as a result you WILL alienate a lot of us.

Freedom of speech is one thing, but this is pure bullcrap, and I am bothered by a website taking pot shots at people who live in my country (which would include myself,) just to motivate people of your country to vote.

How is a call to vote unneccessary for any website? Voting is one of the most important aspects of determining the quality of our lives, and young voters are the least likely to participate. Any awareness that can be raised is a good thing.

Um... I think it's taking a shot at Americans who didn't vote. Last time I checked, our president's approval rating was 41.1... that's very, very weak and means there are a lot of unhappy Americans. Many of which, I'm sure, didn't go to the polls on November 2nd. So the lesson is "Vote now or regret it later."

Perhaps the wording could have been more tactful, but I vote liberal anyway so I'm not very bothered.

You voted. The add doesn't say anything bad about you. Its a warning to people who don't vote.

Because this is an anime website, and not a news outreach program. If I wanted to find out about current events, I would load up the Fox news, or MSNBC news websites; or for that matter any Canadian news websites.
It's irrilevant to the modus operandi of this website, as a whole.

I didn't vote, so I could care less what other people think of our president, what I am getting at however is that ANN' openly takes a pot-shot at the US, to motivate Canadians to vote "correctly", apparently. And Tempest even said it himself:

That is exactly what I am bothered by. He's using a bias to motivate others into voting, and I find that unprofessional. As a webmaster, and news reporter, you're not supposed to let your personal preferences get in the way of reporting something, whether or not it falls in theme to your normal content.
For your website, especially one as popular as ANN', you act as the public face for it, and should act as professionally as possible, and not talk down to your viewers, regardless of your own beliefs.
