Which books do you think would do well on in anime style? Not stereotypically, but anime in general.
Personally, I'd say The Kite Runner should be adapted into an anime which stays true to the book, after seeing that lackluster movie adaptation. |

I think we have had this thread a number of times already.
My contribution is David Weber's Honor Harrington series. Big space opera, martial arts, kick-ass female lead, even a cute six legged cat animal with telepathy powers. They could build 50 episodes out of the books written so far. What doesn't fit? |

A moeification of George Orwell's 1984 would be most pleasant -- have the characters changed into lolis with "Big Brother" becoming "Onii-chan". The series will revolve around an otaku elder brother who imposes his anime related fetishes upon his younger sister and her peers;some of the antics will involve him dressing them up in maid outfits, swimsuits, and such. Of course, the girls would not enjoy this so they begin a revolution against him. I can already imagine PVs of this with the videos saying "Onii-chan is watching you!"

Something I'd love to see adapted is the series of El Capitan Alatriste by Pérez-Reverte. It's an amazing series of historical novels with adventure, mistery and fantastic characters. They were adapted into film once, and though the protagonist was played by Viggo Mortensen, they tried to comprise 5 books in a 2 hours film. It was awful.
I think that, since each book focuses on a different plot, as opposed to series like LoTR, THG or HP which have a long running main plot, this series could work as an anime, each book being a two-cour season. But I doubt they'd sell at all with the gloomy adult protagonist, not to mention they're not really popular anywhere but Spain and LatAm. So yeah, not a chance. Are we just discussing this out of leisure or are we supposed to come up with titles that could possibly become an anime? |

This might sound strange, but when this question comes up I think of the Mowgli stories from The Jungle Books (Warner Brothers has already done right by Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and The White Seal). Warner Brothers already did a version of the first story, Mowgli's Brothers, which if memory serves isn't half bad, but I'd like to see the whole cycle as a limited series, including an impressive Kaa (as opposed to the joke he became in the Disney version), the ambiguity and discomfort of "Letting in the Jungle" and an epic battle scene in "Red Dog". For some reason, I think anime might be the visual medium that could best do the cycle justice with the right writers and actors.

Something makes me want to mention Harry Potter, this may be from seeing some rather interesting doujin, and some anime inspired artwork. I do find it hard to think the story would be a good choice in ways like it is so well known already by books and movies. The idea might go back to the first Japanese track anime I saw was Zero no Tsukaima that had a really Harry Potter feel and look to it. Maybe a spinoff.
I know that even Western books stand a chance at an adaption, the example that comes to mind is Deltora Quest. |

It seems to be a mix between the original source material and the Disney movies, but I'm going to give it a shot as Wikipedia says it got quite a bit of international acclaim. This is too ironic that I ran into it after my initial post. |

The Edge Chronicles (by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddel) or The Last Apprentice (by Joseph Delaney) are both good prospects for anime. They both capture certain adventure and action themes that would work well in an anime adaptation. Plus, the gore in The Last Appreciate could present both a vivid visual experience and an interesting adaptation for the young-adult book.

I only read the first one, and wasn't wild about it (best part IMO was when they were figuring out how to do the "impossible" inspection patrol job). I'd rather see the military-focused books of Lois McMaster Bujold's Vor series (Shards of Honor, Barrayar, The Warrior's Apprentice, and The Vor Game, for starters). Great characters and even some great humor that arises from situation rather than just trying to be funny. Of course, I'm not sure the anime industry as it exists today would adapt it in a way I'd be happy with. Although Miles did have a childhood friend he couldn't express his feelings for, that was a small, small part of the story, and I'm sure they'd expand that and probably have him do pratfalls and get nosebleeds in contrived situations. |

I agree this would be a great candidate for an anime series. It features a boy in a highly male-supremisist militaristic planet who is born with defects that make him physically weak, so he strives to overachieve as a warrior. That's a theme every anime producer seems to love. |

A space anime version of the Trojan War I think would be cool. Not necessarily just the Illiad, but also including the war's end with the horse. Though I kinda wonder how that could be done with not necessarily wood. It's a great amount of stories and could see it done as an anime. The Odyssey's been done, so the war itself could also work.

Can I just check? When you speak of an anime adaptation of the Odyssey, you're referring to Ulysses 31?
