Recently,we saw the release of the latest spinoff in the "Tenchi Muyo!" franchise,"Tenchi Muyo!:War on Geminar." I may watch that at some point but I'd like to discuss one of the other "Tenchi Muyo!" entries,most particularly,one that just left the airwaves after being broadcast by Toonami. And that was "Tenchi Muyo:GXP."

This series revolves around Seina Yamada,a fairly nice guy who has the worst luck of anyone on planet Earth. The poor kid needs a ton of good luck charms because everything goes wrong in his presence and that hasn't exactly made him a lot of friends. One of the few he has is Tenchi Masaki,who Seina tried to visit when a cloaked spaceship landed near the lake near his house and nearly drowned him. Fortunately,he was rescued by a woman named Amane Kaunaq who's a member of the Galaxy Police and a former supermodel. She left some lipstick on Seina when she gave him CPR. She also left with him some info on the GP.

Later,he visits some other friends,Kiriko Masaki (a distant relative of Tenchi's) and her younger brother,Kai. It seems that Kiriko has some feelings for Seina that go beyond friendship but keeps them private. That night,his family sign him up for the GP,thinking that it's some sort of summer camp. They couldn't have been more wrong because he ends up on a GP ship heading for their headquarters.

On the way there,he gets attacked by pirates but manages to defeat them. He meets Ryoko Balca,one of the friendlier pirates and the captain of one of their best ships. She also develops feelings for Seina and later,he meets a priestess named Neju,who's much older than she appears.

Once at GP headquarters,he finds out that his old friend,Kiriko works at the immigration bureau. She doesn't want him in the GP and wants him to return to Earth. Unfortunately for her,Amane has other ideas and helps get him into the GP Academy where he meets Seiryo Tennan,an obnoxious pinhead who tried to marry Ayeka by dueling Tenchi. Needless to say,he lost and Ayeka stayed on Earth.

And,he wasn't very happy about it. In many ways,he's still angry at Tenchi but when Seina arrives at the GP,he takes out all his frustration over his loss out on him. And he still tries to woo Amane,who responds by punching him out...repeatedly. It seems that she and Seiryo knew each other as kids,but she found him to be an utter jerk and stayed far,far away from him.

Overall,"Tenchi Muyo:GXP" is an enjoyable series. You'll have fun watching Seina try to deal with the new world he's gotten thrown into and how he tries to navigate it. It helps that he's got a group of beautiful women helping him out. Although,it would be even more helpful if the women would stop fighting over him long enough to help him adjust.

Although it has some questionable stuff,it's also pretty funny as well. There are probably those that wonder why we don't have our own versions of the harem genre here in America. Others would probably say it's fortunate that we don't,because the genre itself has more junk than gems. Also,many would say it's a sexist genre. I admit it would be interesting to see how our own versions of this genre would fare.

The ending for this series,well,is pretty unexpected and wild. I'm not going to reveal it,you'll just have to watch it for yourself. For the most part,you'll enjoy "Tenchi Muyo:GXP." I did. And I think,you will too.

I've come to view GXP as a harem/Sci-fi/action parody with it being a parody of the original OVA series in particular which each girl being an obvious stand-in. It breaks every harem convention with overall glee {biggest one? spoiler[the no nookie clause]}, its presentation is very self aware and the humor is very adept at getting its punchline across in a very Looney Tunes style {Classic sight gag: The remains of Seina's bike from the first episode. The handlebars just float there long enough to remind you of a certain Coyote.}

I'd say the only things holding it back is below average animation and mediocre character design.
