Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo Genres: drama, science fiction Themes: mecha, post-apocalyptic, real robot Plot:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So I guess this is the third movie of the franchise. Badass Asuka in the beginning, nice. I'm not sure why she's wearing an spoiler[eyepatch] though...(does anyone know why she's wearing an eye patch besides just for decoration??) Well, damn the first part was intense for me. "Do something, Baka Shinji!" Lol, so typical of Asuka. spoiler[Eh so I guess the movie takes place in the future according to the setting of 14+ years in the future]. The artwork seemed okay but I'm not sure it's superb quality. I think it might of lost some touch with its original predecessors. I'm not sure if Anno considered too much for the artwork. I personally found the visuals to be average - nothing special to be honest. The music remains top notch though as I did enjoy it. If there's anything, I also found the music of the EVA franchise to be superb. As for the years setting, I'm not sure why they chose exactly spoiler[14 years] rather than a decade, a century or something else.. Watching Shinji in this film is frustrating to me though. Seems like his reunion with Asuka isn't so pleasant with a punch to the glass wall that perpetrates them. Also, seems like I'm not the only one who is wondering what happened with Ayanami Rei. Oh wait, it's revealed a bit in later half of the movie. Seriously, Shinji no Baka. Well, it's definitely nice to see Kaworu again imo. I missed him from the original series. spoiler[Seems like there's this Human Instrumentality Project that involves the destruction of humans? Wow..] spoiler[RIP] though man Anyways, I'll give a good rating to this movie. I actually kinda enjoyed it and didn't think it was a trainwreck. The action was okay but I didn't like Shinji's personality in this movie at all. I might re-watch this movie in different phases again to see recheck some things again. However, as of now, I thought the movie was alright. |

So, so, so...here we are.
Coming into this without any knowledge of it, that is, I didn't read any articles, watch any trailers, look into any hype ect. ect. For me, this movie marked the beginning of all-new Eva material (aside from Kaworu and spoiler[Ode to Joy] (and probably the overall struggle of spoiler['Shinji's only friend']. Firstly, I'd like to say that, as usual, the animation was stunning. It didn't quite blow me away like 2.22 did, but goddamn was it amazing. It really goes to show how a lot of money and time can really effect the final product. spoiler[Auska's 777 fight near the end] stands out to me especially in this category. Mari plays a more prominent role this time, but I find her spoiler[nonchalant attitude] to be somewhat...grating near the end. Otherwise, I liked her. The spoiler[timeskip] was a surprise. I enjoyed it, however and seeing Misato as what she was was pretty cool. Unlike the TV show, I actually pretty much 'got' everything that was presented (perhaps that has more to do with personal maturity then anything else) and the questions I'm left with I feel are actually things that are left to be...explained. I hope that makes sense. :/ As for Shinji... I'm one of the rare few who actually like Shinji. Sure, he's kind of a crybaby. Sure, he cracks under pressure and yeah, he's spoiler[nearly brought about the literal end of the world twice now], but whatevs. All his annoying flaws, all his eccentricities, they're all things I like about his character as they make him Shinji to me and Neon Genesis wouldn't be Neon Genesis without him. Other little oddities in the film include spoiler[the everlasting youth of Eva pilots, Gendo's glasses and what exactly was the deal with Misato's right eye? They never showed it. It was always under glass or in a shadow.] FURTHERMORE, spoiler[Toji died but his sister didn't?] Whatever, movie. Whatever. I have nothing against the girl, but maaaaaan...I like him. What else... spoiler[Ode to Joy was use spectacularly and what a great version of it. Also, I'm glad they had Kaworu get decapitated, if for no other reason then I'm a stickler for tradition. ] The ending was nice and overall I'd say that because they weren't trying to play 'catch-up', as it were, the movie felt more it's own creature and at a better pace. I'd for-sure call it a good movie and worth a rewatch sometime in the future. I'd give it a 8/10, easy. What the hell was up with that preview?? spoiler[Some insanely fluent animation of Eva 8 + 2 mixed together like a box of Nerds candy fighting whatevers? I'm excited! Can't wait to see it in the year 2020!] |

Also, Asuka's wearing spoiler[the eyepatch because, if you remember 2.22, the Dummy Plugged 01 chomped on her in 03's Entry Plug and she was put into quarantine. I'm assuming the patch is there because she lost the eye in that whole ordeal. ]

Doesn't explain why spoiler[ it glows when she activates Code 777 through her eye patch though. ] If my guess is right, spoiler[ it might be because her eye did get contaminated a bit.] |

Yeah, as I watched the movie a second time, I realized that it's essentially a 'set-up' movie to the finale, which I'm assuming (hoping) will lay out answers to all the little questions that I have. Questions like spoiler[When Shinji pulled the spears from what's-her-name, why was is the Mk.06 that had the angel in it? Why did they say that letting it be would continue Third Impact? I thought it was Eva 01 that started Third Impact at the end of 2.22.] |

If I recall correctly spoiler[Shinji pulled the spears from Lilith the second angel. Unit 06 in Eva 2.2 was said to be a specially constructed unit that Seele had created on the moon and according to their own plans that Nerv and Gendo were not privy too. Shinji started the Third impact but it was cut short. So I think this would have been the 4th impact if it too hadn't been stopped. Unit 06 might have had something to do with Seele's version of Instrumentality]. However, I'm not too clear on everything myself. I expect that just as Shinji's spoiler[actions] were a set up for Eva 3.0, that this movie is also setting things up for the finale, and hopefully some answers. |

You know, I'm not quite sure what "cliffhanger" Zac is referring to in his review of this move on the ANN cast. He said Shinji has some ultimate decision he needs to make and there's a mega cliff hanger...but the third movie seemed pretty tied off to me. Eva 2.0 was way more of a cliffhanger...
Anyhow, I'm glad the creators decided to go beyond the 3rd impact and explore new territory. I'm curious how the conflict between NERV and Wile will be resolved...along with Shinji's reaction to the events of the 4th impact. Also, was anyone else getting spoiler[a homo erotic vibe between Shinji and Kaworu?] I can't wait for the final film. |

The vibe you noticed was consistent with the original. I know others didn't consider it such, but I did actually feel like this film was a bit of a train wreck. It seemed almost incoherent at times. I liked the other 2 very much but this one was not nearly as good in my opinion.
I didn't hate it, but I didn't really like it much either. I'm hoping the next may be good enough to make my impression of this one better. |

Xanas took the words right out of my mouth. "Trainwreck" definately. Funnily enough, "trainwreck" is also the word I used to describe Ridley Scott's Prometheus, and 3.0 kind of feels like the "Prometheus" of the Evangelion Franchise.
Let's see, the first Act of the film was taken up by basically one half hour long sequence, parts of which actually looked comical. I'm pretty sure I laughed when I saw that spoiler[fleet of battleships floating in the air]. Added to that, they decided to introduce a bunch pointless tropey characters including old favourites like spoiler["friend's little sister"] and "pre-pubescent bridge bunny". I don't think any part of this film actually engaged me and honestly it felt more like animated Eva fanfiction than a professionally made film. This film has actually further bolstered my belief that the original serie's greatness is ultimately carried by the character relationships and psychological conflicts. Without those, there isn't very much that actually makes Eva stand out. |

I hope this is not off topic but I am thinking about importing this movie. I know it dose not have any English subtitles so I have been trying to find a script in English or a plot synopsis.
So far all I have find is torrent downloads. Maybe my search-fu is low but I really would like join the conversation if anybody can drop me a link I would be grateful. |

I am curious about something, does Sharon Stone-I mean Ritsuko do anything in the film? How much screen time does she get?

Well.....I was rather unimpressed with this one....mostly because I watched it in like the absolute worst quality ever, couldn't see half the screen and I had witnessed the nothing-short-of AMAZING prequel: You Cannot Advance.
Not a lot happened here until the last twenty minutes, imho. The visuals that I could pick up were nice though. |

Sharon Stone--I mean Ritsuko has almost no screen time in this one. Mari hardly has much Imho as well. We haven't gotten the background on Asuka like we did in the tv show, either. I think because the story is being redone as movies there's not as much time to give the whole original cast much in the way of development. I think they may have narrowed the focus primarily to Shinji because of the movie format with other characters being relegated to the background. You have to remember the original show probably totaled something like 11 hours not including End of Evangelion. The total for the 4 movies will probably be no more than 6 hours, which is roughly a little more than 1/2 the running time of the original. My concern is that unless the last movie is extra long, say 2 to 2 1/2 hours, we may not get as many answers as we would like. |

Oh my. That would leave us with more questions than there are answers...and as if End of Evangelion didn't leave enough questions itself.... |
