I picked this up yesterday and I have to say:

I LIKE IT.

It has familiar stuff like the hero boy and his perv bud. Hot chick who was a friend in kindergarten...

But it also has new or different takes on stuff. The "bad boy/cool dude" got his ass kicked. The hero got his ass kicked. The hot chick shows interest in hero... but also the bad boy. The bad boy is actually friendly towards the hero instead of being competition. PLUS... the situation it is set in is indie rock music. So thats a new thing!

The art is different but you get used to it quick. Reminds me of One Piece a little bit but set in urban environment.

I've only seen the anime, but although the bands may be independent/unsigned, they definitely aren't indie rock. Aside from the musical qualities, indie rock bands aren't generally looking and trying to create their big break.

Does it matter what kind of rock it is, really?

Anyway, I liked it, found it a lot of fun. The English segments were better in the anime, because I found it much more interesting when the Japanese speaker-speaking-English was obviously a Japanese-speaker-speaking-English. Even if he did sound blocked up.

On the whole, I'm enjoying the series so far.

Also, I love the fact that their entire school curriculum seems to be based on professional wrestling. As a former fan, I find it quite scintilating, such as the Harley Race - historic 6 NWA titles factlet.

NOPE!

it does not matter! in the manga, you can't hear it anyway. the situations of a japanese manga are implausible anyway and who cares? it serves as the backdrop for the relationships that are forming.

plus the music industry is comepletely different from what america is like anyway.

Yes it does if you want a realistic story. They didn't claim they were indie in the manga so I don't hold anything against the manga-ka yet.

Other than that I found the first volume very interesting although I hope the release schedule will step up. Is it still going on in Japan?

Yep. In Japan it's at volume 22. I've read till 21. It's really good, and rather realistic, unlike most of the shounen I've read. They're lots of ups and downs, and by 22 beck (the band) hasn't really achieved much in japan, despite a reasonably successful US tour... Anyway, I agree that the music is very important. Later on there are many references to Nirvana, Hendrix, Rage Against The Machine. The music is only slightly less important than the character relationships and development

Beck certainly didn't disapoint me. One of the most refreshing shonen titles in a long while. One of the big appeals is Yukio. It's easy to sympathize with him and grow attached because Sakuishi really makes him feel like a real person. I think everyone has felt his uneasiness and excitement at meeting new people and discovering new things. Plus, like Sakuishi's other manga, Beck has a great sense of humor. It's a bit annoying that Tokyopop is releasing it so slow, especially when they release shorter series at a faster pace.
