Its interesting that they mention Sony having production problems when it was reported a while back that Microsoft was actually having problems with low yields

Nintendo's on it's own generational track. They don't need to copy others Razz

In other words, sales of the Vita are not even close to what we were expecting, so we're going to be pulling back.

Please Sony - If other companies such as Microsoft and Nintendo were stealing your technology, you would have done what Apple did to Samsung and sue them.

So, Sony finally admits to what has been the obvious for so long? Laughing

It makes sense from a business standpoint, and I really do like the PS3, too, but that quote really makes them sound cheap (and a bit unimaginative).

really? i think they are just being patient when developing their next console, who knows there may not even be a market and there certainly isn't a demand for the next generation. but you can't blame them with all the slip ups they have had.

i wouldn't say the ps3 was cheap even with that knowledge, the ps3 is still one of the most advanced pieces of equipment which still puts computers to shame to this day (processing power) and is the primary component for the worlds most advanced super computer. granted their approach is rather detestable but the quality of the product relative to the wait is worth another ten years of waiting (from when it was launched).

so inshort this is a smart move if they want to continue to deliver products which reflect their reputation due to their current situation. but ignoring all that you should read more carefully, all they are saying is that they don't mind if rivals make the 1st move and that they are aware of the benefits available. nothing more.

At this late in the development cycle, there's not really much Sony can do to change the specs. Since both Microsoft and Sony will be using regular AMD components, there won't be too much difference. What the extra time can give Sony is how to market what worked and what didn't work at the Xbox launch.

We need a new generation desperately. If Microsoft or Sony doesn't release new consoles soon, then the graphics will not improve either. Because the many game developers port their games from consoles to PC.
Besides there will without a doubt be a market for consoles. When they buy a console, they don't have to worry about buying new components.

We can see from the comments posted here so far that different people demand different things from video games. But I don't think there is quite as much drive for a next generation Playstation as there was from the PS2 to the PS3, when we had the transition from DVDs and SD TV to Blu-Rays and HDTV.

Me, I still have a large backlog of PS2 games, and only hope I can finish them before the hardware starts to fail.

Well, I guess that's one way of trying to put a positive spin on being late...

Reminds me of the time Hirai tried to explain that PS3 being hard to develop for was actually a really good thing Laughing

Ditto. Whenever I got the itch for buying new games or hardware I just need to look at my massive backlog. Obviously doesn't always work though...

With Quad eight core computers and much faster video cards than the PS3 can even attempt to stand next two. The statement that the PS3 is even close to current computers is just plain old wrong.

also Sony has been releasing games for the PS3 with major issues such as black ops 2 shutting older PS3 down mid game play. 24,000 people have posted this issue to the black ops 2 web site. I sent a letter to Sony explaining the problem that I have seen with my own eyes and Sony said its not the game the systems is dead.

how odd seeing as i can still play hours of any other game on the system with out a shutdown or any issue at all. The disk looks fine as well and three of my other friends who owned fat boy PS3 also had this issue with the same game.

I did not enjoy Sony or the game developers response.

No, it isn't. Comparing a quad processor to the Cell is like comparing a lemon to a dandelion.

Current gen consoles face the same problem: lack of memory.

While the video chipsets may be upgraded for the next two, the biggest improvement will be the larger memory capacity.

The PS3's configuration made development a challenge, because the Cell doesn't perform its actions the same way as quad+ processors do.

Yeah, both 360 and PS3 only have 512mb RAM.

This became an issue with Skyrim lagging on the PS3. While the 360 has shared RAM (giving developers more control how RAM is used), the PS3 divides its RAM into 256mb for video and 256mb for OS and game. Apparently, the Skyrim game needed more than 256mb to work efficiently.

The PS4 was to have 2gb RAM, but when it was leaked that the next Xbox was to have at least 8gb RAM, Sony upped the PS4 to at least 8gb RAM too. That's good - the more the RAM, the less the waiting time.

I don't think we're going to move away from load times anytime in the near future. More memory simply means more textures can be rendered, meaning more real-time renders (as demo'd last year by Square-Enix).

Though, it's possible a good portion of the game can be loaded into memory. However, with the move to bluray for storage, all I see is what we've been seeing: more realism, less desire for storing the game in memory.

Perhaps this time, things will change.

Nah, not really. The Wii U is, more or less, a different console concept at this point and seeks to put interface over capability. Works for some, particularly casual games, but for more hardcore gamers like myself it's just a gimmicky novelty that doesn't meet the needs and pales in its capability to what the other consoles and PC gaming market are capable of providing.

So they made the first move in the next console generation, but only for their console for that market, which really isn't even in the same market as the others any longer.
